William MCCANTS

ABT 1680 - ABT Jan 1734

ID Number: I7347

  • RESIDENCE: County Down, IRE and Williamsburgh District, SC
  • BIRTH: ABT 1680, County Down, Ireland
  • DEATH: ABT Jan 1734, Died Young; Williamsburgh Dist. South Carolina
  • RESOURCES: See: Notes Possible Brother of James [S11]
Father: ANDREW CANT III

Family 1 : Isabella

Notes

Died soon after arrival. The first reference to the McCants family in SC is on 15 Jan 1734. "John Wilson, James McClelland, and James McCanse, three of the apprizers appointed to apprize the goods and chattles of William McCanse. The appraised value was 500-0-0 pounds. The appraisal was signed by John Wilson, James McClelland and James McCants".

Based upon this James McCants and William McCants and James were possible brothers, or this is James son, William.

The only information we have on the William McCants, believed to be a son or brother of David, is that he was married to Isabella and died about 1733 or 1734.

This William had been married to a woman named Isabella. on Nov 25, 1734 John McKanse and James Mackanse were appointed appraisers of the estate of William MacKanse as directed by his widow Isabella, administratrix.

The Webb mss. in the SC Hist. Library says that David McCants who died in 1759 left a son, William. [S446] [S11]

They were recruited in the counties of Pike, Wilkinson, Holmes, Copiah, Adams, and Jasper. Sent to Virginia the regiment was brigaded under Generals Trimble, Featherston, Posey, and Harris. After fighting in Jackson's Valley Campaign, it participated in the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor, then shared in the Petersburg siege south of the James River and the Appomattox operations.
