The info I have on John McGee is out of a book by Rev Eli W. Caruthers titled "The Old North State in 1776, Volumes I and II. Look under Martha McFarland McGee Bell, she is John's second wife and is a patriot of the American Revolutionary War. The book mentions John McGee and his store, family and and property. Martha ran the estate and the general store after John McGee's death. There are numerous stories of her life and adventures and of John McGee's life. This book is available from the Guilford Courthouse Military Park bookstore for $19.95 at http://www.nps.gov/guco/ As you know Martha was a spy for America and is recognized as a patriot. The Old North State book has many stories of her revolutionary war experiences. Martha spied on Lord Cornwalis and his British troops and her monument is shown in the Guilford Courthouse National Park guidebook. Two of John and Martha McGee's sons are the Rev William McGee and the Rev John McGee who preached at Cane Ridge where thousand of people fell to the ground being slain by the spirit. You can read about William and John in the book about Gods Plan for America titled "From Sea to Shining Sea" by Peter Marshall available from most major bookstores.

I am also researching John McGee. I am interested in finding information on his parents and where in Ireland he is from. Does anyone have this information?

Can you make a copy of your information on the 1772 inventory of John McGee's store available to me.

Thank You, Michael

Message Board Post:

I am very interested in comparing notes with you on Colonel John McGee. He was my 6th great grandfather. His daughter by his first wife, Nancy Ann McGee (c.1753-1832), married Robert Lindsay (d. 1801) in 1772. Their son William Lindsay (c.1777-1841) married Elisabeth Briggs (c.1784-1871) in Feb., 1807. Their daughter Guilianna Lindsay (Dec. 29, 1807-1885) married Elswick S. Field (born c. 1807/8) in 1831. Their son John Andrew Field (1846-1883) married Mary Adeline Wilkinson (1846-1906) in 1865. Their son Ernest Marion Field (1866-1904) married Mary Rhetta Bell (1862-1947) in 1888. Their son John Levi Field (1902-1963) was my grandfather. I never knew him as he died before I was born.

I was also interested to see that your name is Julian, as that name has early connections with my Field line in Randolph & Guilford Counties. Elswick Field, listed above, was the son of Jeremiah Field (c. 1764-1830) and Eleanor Sherwood. Jeremiah was the son of William Field, Jr. (born before 1727-d. 1805) and his wife Lydia, maiden name unknown. William Field had a brother Joseph (born after 1727, died c. 1780) who married Lydia Julian. After Joseph's death, Lydia married an Armfield. For a long time, because two brothers married ladies named Lydia, I thought the Julian line was in my ancestry.

Best Regards,

John Field Pankow
