William LINDSEY Sr.

ABT 1745 - ABT 1786

ID Number: I91499

  • RESIDENCE: Albemarle or Bedford or Henry and Montgomery and Carroll Co. VA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1745, maybe Essex Co. Virginia
  • DEATH: ABT 1786, Virginia
  • RESOURCES: See: notes [S3397] [S3399] [S3722]
Father: (RESEARCH QUERY) LINDSEY

Family 1 : Mary BARKSDALE
  1. +Henry LINDSEY Sr.
  2.  William LINDSEY Jr.
  3.  Christopher "Kit" LINDSEY
  4.  Rebecca LINDSEY
  5.  Jesse LINDSEY
  6.  Mary "Polly" LINDSEY
  7.  Elizabeth LINDSEY

Notes

CONFLICT: Birth date: Feb. 7, 1731
father: James Lindsey, mother: (possibly) Sarah Daniel. They had six children. 1. William Lindsey. 2. Henry Lindsey. 3. Christopher Lindsey. 4. Rebecca Lindsey. 5. Mary (Polly) Lindsey, born 1778, died 1859. and 6. Jesse Lindsey.

"It has been reported that William Lindsay was killed at the Battle of Gilford Court House. The current records for the people that were in the Battle show a William Lindsay (from Virginia) being wounded and returning to Virginia. However the name of his wife and two children do not match these records. I was told that these records are often unreliable and was given a form to return to Guilford Courthouse National Mil. Park if I have official proof of this William Lindsay participating in the battle."

A William Lindsey lived in Montgomery and Grayson counties in the late 1770s and 1780s on Big Reed Island Creek, which is now in Carroll County. Henry Lindsey Sr. later lived on the same land; he was almost certainly William's son. There is no indication in the records as to who William's wife was, but one theory has been that she was none other than the Mary Barksdale who later married Capt. John Hurst. The timing seems to work: William Lindsey apparently died before 1787 and Capt. John Hurst and Mary Barksdale Lindsey had a son Beverly Hurst in 1788 in Virginia. In the years around 1785 and 1786 Capt. John Hurst was living on Max Creek in Montgomery (now Pulaski) County, about a dozen miles from where William Lindsey probably lived and died. That proximity makes me wonder why Capt. John found the widow Mary in Bedford County, the county seat of which is about 90 miles away. The Lindsey family had apparently previously lived in the Pittsylvania/Henry County area. Mary's father was Henry Barksdale; his will was proven in Henry County on 12 May 1788. So even if Mary had gone back home after William died, she probably went to Henry County, not Bedford. One must remember that the Bedford County story was passed down to us by Ben Franklin Hurst, who at the same time thought Capt. John Hurst was in Culpeper County instead of the correct Montgomery County."

Although it is not proven, see Lindsey lineages #4 & #5 in the graphic at
the bottom of the web page for DNA Group 3
http://www.clanlindsay.com/dna_group_3.htm

The research of Bill Hurst has been accepted by his cousin, Lindsey participant #L0070, in establishing the relationship between William Lindsay & Mary Barksdale to their sons, Henry & Jesse Lindsey. Bill Hurst used the family bible of William Lindsay, son of Henry Lindsey, in his proof.
According to Bill Hurst, in addition to Henry & Jesse, William Lindsey & Mary Barksdale had other children named Rebecca & Mary Lindsey.

Can anyone prove if William Lindsey(1731 Essex Co.,VA - 1786 VA) who married
Mary Barksdale (b. 1734 Caroline Co., VA) is the son of James Lindsey (1700
Essex Co., VA - 1782 Caroline Co., VA) who married Sarah Daniel (b. 1704
Caroline Co., VA)??
