Ray Isbell, , notes that this John might be the head of a line
as shown here:
John FLOYD Jr. d: 1783 Lunenburg + Ann HURST b: Abt 1742 d: Abt
1781
Capt. John FLOYD III b: 28 Oct 1758 d: 15 Jan 1836 + Nancy (Ann)
ANDREWS b: 4 Jul 1757 d: 22 Mar 1857
Martha Elizabeth (Patsey) FLOYD b: After 1786 d: Bef 1836 +
Nathaniel PITTS b: 1785 d: 1836..... and he has others.
or:
John Floyd "of Accomack" was also the father of:
John Floyd Jr. d. c 1783 Lunenburg Co., VA., m. Ann Hurst;
parents of:
Capt. John Floyd III b. 28 Oct 1758 VA., d. 15 Feb 1836 Newberry
Co., S.C., married Ann (Nancy) Andrews.
Their daughter: Martha Floyd ("Patsy") married Nathan Pitts.
Many descendants of Patsy Floyd Pitts maintain this connection,
and it is adopted in two books, as explained by Ray in March,
2003:
"Hi, Pat, Actually, no, I'm afraid I haven't seen proof that
John of "Accomac" was the father of William (editor: our William
of Amherst) and John Jr., but "Newberry County, South Carolina,
Historical and Genealogical," by George Leland Summer, Sr.,
Newberry, SC., 1950, stated that William was an uncle of Capt.
John Floyd of Newberry and married the daughter of "an Indian
Princess" (which was Adadiah Davis, of course).
"I thought that an earlier book, "Annals of Newberry" by John
Belton O`Neall (1793-1863), also said the same thing in the
section on Capt. John Floyd, but will have to doublecheck on
that.
"Suffice to say that the two branches of Floyds evidently had
been in contact at least by the 1890s (if not before 1850s?), or
before 1900 anyway since the information was at least 50 years
old when Sumner wrote it, and perhaps someone in the family had
been writing to William Floyd's descendants to discuss
genealogy. Of course, that was all the rage in the 1890s, so it
could the information could have come to S.C. in that way.
"But since grandchildren of William Floyd & Abadiah Davis were
living as late as 1850, it's not that far-fetched that the
families had exchanged a few letters or at least knew they were
cousins. Grandchildren of William and John (Jr) living in 1850
would have only been second cousins to one another, or the
children of first cousins.
"Some of Capt. John Floyd II's children lived into the 1880s."
Ed.: I think it entirely possible there is a connection to
William of Amherst here. Later, Ray writes:
"I found my pages from "Annals of Newberry (S.C.)" by Belton,
and there are a lot of pages on the Capt. John Floyd family, but
I don't find ANY references at all to his being John Floyd III
or the nephew of William Floyd, etc.
"Therefore, the earliest published reference to William Floyd
being his uncle appears to be the 1950 George Leland Summer
book. No sources are cited in that book, but it is packed with
information which Summer collected for decades. No doubt he got
it from some of Capt. John Floyd's descendants in Newberry, S.C.
Capt. John Floyd had children living into the 1880s and
grandchildren living past 1900, but who knows which ones Summer
contacted. I wonder if his files & correspondence have survived
and might be in some archives.
"The book is: "Newberry County, South Carolina Historical and
Genealogical Annals" by George Leland Summer (not Sumner)
(1881-1956)."
