Surnames: Blair, Ruth, Dawson, Carnahan
Classification: Query In Reply to: Thomas Blair, Guilford Co NC by: Joy Estes Shaw

I don't show that Thomas Blair, born February 1, 1764, who married Sarah Carnahan, had a daughter named Elizabeth. I show their children were:

Rev. Jonathan Blair, Jane Blair, John Carnahan Blair, William C. Blair, Jesse M. Blair, Andrew Blair, Hugh Stephen Blair, and Jennie Blair.

I also descend from John Blair, the father of your Thomas Blair. As you mentioned, he had a son, also named John Blair, born October 22, 1767, who married his first cousin, Martha Blair, born February 12, 1771. She was the daughter of Jane Ruth and her husband, Major Thomas Blair, born 1738, the brother of John Blair, born about 1742.

Both these brother were sons of a John Blair, who was born about 1700, probably in Argylshire, Londonderry, Ireland. It is believed he brought his family to America about 1746, possibly with his brother, Hugh Blair, who married Mary Dawson in about 1738 in Ireland.

Hope this help you in some way. Tom Green

  1. +NICHOLAS de STAFFORD

Notes

"Robert de Stafford, possessed at the time of the General Survey, lordships in Suffolk, Gloucestershire, Lincolnshire, Warwickshire, and Staffordshire, in all 131, and Dugdale surmises, that the assumption of the surname Stafford arose from him being Governor of Stafford Castle, which had been erected by William the Conqueror; for his name was originally De Toenei, and he is said to have been a younger son of Roger de Toenei, standard bearer of Normandy. Of this Robert de Stafford, who lived till the time of King Henry I., nothing further is known than his founding an Augustine priory, at Stone, in Staffordshire, upon the spot where Enysan de Waltone, one of the companions of the Conqueror, had killed two nuns and a priest. He married Avice of Clare, and was succeeded by his son, Nicholas."
