Notes

"From Phyllis O. Whitten (Mrs. Herbert O.) 7022 Marguerite Ct., Falls Ch.,Va.
The name of FOGGE/FOG (in the old letter styling of 'ff' for 'F') is an ancient name and can be found in the Domesday Book, compiled by commissioners appointed by William the Conqueror in 1086, and Foggs are found as land owners in The Hundred Rolls prepared in 1273 by King Edward I. It was assumed by Dr. John S. Fogg, historian and genelogist, that our name is not Welsh, none being found in those records, but Danish or Scandinavian from Viking days, perhaps the in Jutes. They were people who came from the land of fog! These tribes settled in England, as well as all over Europe. Fog/Foggia was known in Italy during Roman Empire days.

Dr. Fogg reports that in an original manuscript in England, (p. 85, paragraph 470, Calendar of State Papers, Colonial Series, America and West Indies, 1574-1674) that the name Fogg, later changed to Fogo, was recorded in regard to a bay on the northern coast of Newfoundland. Historian S. E. Morison said Fogo Island, Newfoundland, got its name from "y do fogo" (of the fire.). Dr. Fogg also said that "HARRISON'S Surnames" indictes Fogo probaly represents the Anglo-Saxon Focga.
