Dr. Fogg reports that in an original manuscript in England, (p.
85, paragraph 470, Calendar of State Papers, Colonial Series,
America and West Indies, 1574-1674) that the name Fogg, later
changed to Fogo, was recorded in regard to a bay on the northern
coast of Newfoundland. Historian S. E. Morison said Fogo Island,
Newfoundland, got its name from "y do fogo" (of the fire.). Dr.
Fogg also said that "HARRISON'S Surnames" indictes Fogo probaly
represents the Anglo-Saxon Focga.

Decem 8 1698 Nath: Fogg bound to Mr Abram Dyson for 4 Years
Essex Co. Orders 1699-1702 pg 124 10th of August 1702 Ordered
that the Complaint of NATH; FOGGE, Servt to HENRY REEVES, to
give in their evidence concerning the matter at the next Court.
Essex Co. Orders Pg 42. 23 Oct 1707. Mr. Francis Browne and Mr.
William Young meade camplant ass being churchwardens of South
Farnham Paries (Parish) that Mary Butler being lately delivered
off a bastard child and shee did make oath that Nathaniell Foge
was the father and that shee put the childe to said Browne for a
maintainance, whareupon Browne ware forsed to put out the childe
to Mr. Joseph Reeves and give him 800 pounds of tobacco to keep
and maintaine the child and save the parish harmless, and did
pray an attachment against Foge estate for 800 pounds. Order to
Sheriff to attach estate.

Essex Co record of 1707 notes he is a carpenter for on October
14 he appoints Mr. Muscoe his attorney to sue for compensation
for carpentry work performed. Nathan apparently in 1709 decided
to leave the construction business for the food and lodging
industry. On March 10 1709 and March 9, 1710, he was granted
licenses to operate an ordinary.

Release. 15 Feb. 1711/12. William Stoaks of St. Anns Par.,
planter, sells Nathaniel ffogg of the same Par., "Endholder"
('Inholder' i.e. inhabitant, obsolete), 100 acres in St. A's
Par., adj. land of Thomas Davis, land of James Hollaway and that
of George Loyd. Signed the marke of William Stoakes. Wit: Robert
Jones, Jno Gibson. Rec. 14 Feb. 1711/12.

and ELIZABETH his Wife ordered that JOSEPH SMITH and SALVATOR
MUSCOE gent. and JOHN BAGGE Clk., or any two of them audit and
settle ye Accots. between the partys & return their report to
next Court.
Over his lifetime, he would acquire 1100 acres.
By 1744, NATHAN began to take actions in comtemplation of his
death. In January of 1744, he gave his son Thomas 1201/2 acres.
Three years later, he gave the same number of acres to his
daughter Catherine Motley.

William and Elizabeth had a daughter Guilianna Lindsay
(1807-1885) who married Elswick S. Field in 1831. They had 8
children: Martha Eliza (c. 1832-1844), Eleanor B. (c. 1833),
William B. (c. 1835), Susan L. (c. 1838), Robert H. (c. 1840),
Thomas E. (c. 1843), John Andrew (1846-1883) and Frances
Guilianna (1851-1919). I am descended from John Andrew Field, my
2nd great grandfather.
