In early 1809 Leonard began selling land and sent half his
slaves to Natchez for Alexander to rent out; he planned to move
his family and the rest of the plantation in the summer but
waited until the completion of his wife's pregnancy. By late
fall his entourage was delayed in Cincinnati because of low
water on the Ohio River but reached Natchez in January 1810.
"Our party [consists] of Mr. Waters and family, including 5 or 6
negroes, your brother Thomas [Rawlings], James Magruder, Sammy
Sasscer (my man Friday), wife, five children, five servants and
self, with the damnedest cavalcade that ever man was burdened
with; not less than seven horses compose my Troop: they convey a
close carriage (Jersey Stage) a Gig and horse Cart"
Alexander and Leonard bought a plantation near the village of
Washington from Grayson, another Marylander, and named it
Propinquity for its nearness to Fort Dearborn where Lt. Col.
Leonard Covington assumed command. Washington, 6 miles from
Natchez, was home to many ex-Marylanders. Ann Wilkinson and her
unmarried daughters lived at Propinquity for her husband was a
first cousin of Mrs. Covington (nee Rebecca Mackall). (Note:
Covington was promoted to General and died during the invasion
of Canada.)

"On June 9, 1852, Alexander D. drowned while driving his cattle
across the Red River in
preparation for a move to Texas. His widow Martha Elizabeth
remained in Louisiana to settle
the estate while his brother Thomas S. and family came on to
Texas.
"Martha Elizabeth later married Gabriel A. Downs in May 1853. A
son, Walter Branch Downs, was born on October 31, 1854 and on
March 7, 1855, his mother died. Three months later little Walter
Branch Downs died, June 10, 1855. The other three McCants
orphans were place under the guardianship of their uncle Thomas
S. McCants and wife, Eliza, who were residing in Evergreen,
Texas, where they farmed a large acreage of land. The children
were well cared for and received their education by tutors."
"On Nov 5, 1852 in connection with some Gerald Property that was
being divided it states Madam Martha Elizabeth Gerald, widow of
Alexander D. McCants, dec'd now residing in Avoyelles Parish.
She had been living also in 1842 in Rapides Parish. Descendants
in Evergreen, TX say Alexander was drowned in Louisiana crossing
a river preparatory to moving to Texas."
