Notes

"He came first in 1628, as one of the Assistants of the Mass. Bay Co. to Salem. Returned to England with his family in the Lyon in 1630. He came again in the Blessing, in July 1635, aged 42, with wife Ann, aged 42 and settled at Roxbury. His wife joined the church in 1635. Removed to Scituate. Admitted to church in 28 Nov 1636. Took oath of allegiance to Plymouth Colony 1 Feb 1638. Town officer. His surveying instruments referred to in Plymouth Colony Records in 1642. Removed to Marshfield; propr. 1643; town officer. Was not in sympathy with the attitude of Mass.Bay and Plymouth governments toward persons who differed from the received opinions in politics and religion; and used his influence for greater charity toward Quakers, etc. The elders expressed their disapproval of his utterances; the church of Plymouth sent him a message by John Cook, which is recorded in the book of the Second Church, Scituate, dated 14 Apr 1645; hoping he would desist from proceedings intended, but questioning whether they would commune with him if he went on. He went to England in 1646 with a petition to parliament for the liberty of English subjects.

He removed to Barbadoes in 1650 & died in 1655 or 1656. Will dated 13 Jul 1655, gave property to his son John; daughters Judith, Frances, Anna, Margaret & Mary. Part of these heirs sold their shares in certain lands 18 Jul 1657. (Pope 1965, p. 470.)

Gov. Winslow was instructed to answer charges of a lack of religious freedom in Massachusetts, and a denial of civil privileges to such as were not church members by Robert Child, William Vassall and others.--(Holton 1877, p.52.) On the following page Holton reports that WilliamVassall, was of Scituate; a man somewhat in advance of the age in which he lived, in his views of civil and religious liberty. He was one of the agents sent to England in 1646, with complaints against the Mass. colony. He probably helped to publish a pamphlet "New England's Jonas cast up at London, etc., a small quarto of 22 pages, printed in London, in 1647.

William Vassall was one of the first assistants of Mass., chosen in England in 1629; and came over in 1630, in the fleet with Winthrop. He made another trip back to England but returned in 1632 and settled in Scituate, in the colony of New Plymouth, where he remained until about 1650, when, having laid the foundatino of several large estates in the West Indies, he removed to Barbadoes in 1655. Hutchinson says he was a man of pleasant and affable manners, but always in opposition to government, both in Mass. & in Plymouth."
