While there, John met a beautiful french young lady named Parene
Marioneau, whose father was a civil servant for France, and had
lived in the Louisiana territory.
John and Parene fell in love at first sight. He " knew no French
and she spoke on English", but that did not matter at all. He
tried to ask her to marry him, but she didn't understand him. So
he took off his shirt and ripped it in two,. . then he tied the
two halves together,. .to mean to ." to tie the Knot ". She said
"Oh, Oui, Oui" and the Captain of their returning ship married
them on board, en route to Louisiana. Her Marioneau family moved
here with her to stay in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
They settled at his Plantation of Rosedown and planted the
beautiful Live Oak Alley along his drive, that still remains
there today. His home's foundation is still under the present
house, which is there today. There is a letter of his that is in
the LSU Hill Memorial Library, telling his brother Gilbert, in
New York, of Life here in Louisiana. He came down with Yellow
fever and died, leaving Parene and his children. He is buried on
the grounds, in an unmarked grave. The tragic lost of Rosedown
is another story altogether."
