Notes

The story of John Mills and Parene Marioneau is a love story that has been passed down from one generation to the next, on my side of the family. Some say it's a fable, but we think it is true.
John Mills was a well known pioneer of the Felicanas and all West Florida. He had established his holdings at Bayou Sara (which he named for his sister) and was a local entrepreneur. He was well known for his knowledge of this area. The U.S. President wished to acquire the french colony of New Orleans and the french east bank lands along the Mississippi River to Natchez, Mississippi. John Mills was hired as the land expert to accompany the American envoy to Paris, to negotiate with Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte' to buy this land from France. Napoleon sold all the now Louisiana Purchase to them and the Isle of Orleans.

While there, John met a beautiful french young lady named Parene Marioneau, whose father was a civil servant for France, and had lived in the Louisiana territory.

John and Parene fell in love at first sight. He " knew no French and she spoke on English", but that did not matter at all. He tried to ask her to marry him, but she didn't understand him. So he took off his shirt and ripped it in two,. . then he tied the two halves together,. .to mean to ." to tie the Knot ". She said "Oh, Oui, Oui" and the Captain of their returning ship married them on board, en route to Louisiana. Her Marioneau family moved here with her to stay in Natchitoches, Louisiana.

They settled at his Plantation of Rosedown and planted the beautiful Live Oak Alley along his drive, that still remains there today. His home's foundation is still under the present house, which is there today. There is a letter of his that is in the LSU Hill Memorial Library, telling his brother Gilbert, in New York, of Life here in Louisiana. He came down with Yellow fever and died, leaving Parene and his children. He is buried on the grounds, in an unmarked grave. The tragic lost of Rosedown is another story altogether."
