Thomas Lynch was a small boy when his father died. Being the only surviving son he received a considerable estate. After reaching manhood, he became prominent and served as a delegate to several important conventions.


LYNCH, Thomas, 1727-1776: LYNCH, Thomas, (father of Thomas Lynch, Jr.), a Delegate from South Carolina; born in St. James Parish, Berkeley County, S.C., in 1727; attended the common schools; engaged in planting, with extensive rice plantations on the Santee River and elsewhere; served in the commons house of assembly 1751-1757, 1761-1763, 1765, 1768, and 1772; delegate to the Colonial Congress in 1765; member of the general committee 1769-1774; delegate to the First and Second Provincial Congresses in 1775 and 1776; member of the first State general assembly in 1776; Member of the Continental Congress in 1774-1776, but was unable to sign the Declaration of Independence because of illness; died in Annapolis, Anne Arundel County, Md., in December 1776 while en route to his home; interment in St. Anne’s Churchyard, Annapolis, Md.


From Register of St. Philip's Parish (explanatory footnote) - page 203. Thomas Lynch, Jr was one of the five delegates from SC to the continental Congress at the time of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence and was one of the four South Carolina delegates to sign that document. The fifth delegate was Thomas Lynch, father of this delegate. The elder Lynch was ill when the Declaration was passed and was unable to sign it. He died at Annapolis, MD, the following December and was buried there. There is a vacant place on the Declaration for his signature. The younger man and his wife were lost at sea in 1779, leaving no descendants. Thomas Lynch, Sr died at age 49 and Thomas, Jr. at thirty. Although they died early they rendered unselfish and valuable public service that had a part in shaping the destiny of our country. [S1635]

"JOHN RUSH, the founder of this family, was b. in England, 1620; d. 1699, at Byberry, Pennsylvania; commanded a troop of horse in Cromwell's Army; he embraced the principles of the Quakers in 1660; emigrated to Pennsylvania, 1683, with seven children and several grandchildren and settled at Byberry, thirteen miles from Philadelphia; in 1691 he and his whole family became Keithians and in 1697 most of them became BAPTISTS; his sword was in possession of Jacob RUSH and his watch in possession of Gen. William DARK of Virginia, but later both were deposited in Independence Hall in Philadelphia; m. 8th June, 1648, at Horton County, Oxford, Susanna LUCAS."

I. Elizabeth, b. 16th June, 1649; m. in London, 27th May, 1680, Richard COLLET, by whom she had issue; emigrated with her husband to Pennsylvania, 1682, and settled at Byberry.
