"Erasmus Tolleson lived to the age of about 100 years. After his death, his son, John Tolleson, continued at Buzzard Roost, which had become know as racing grounds and the rendezvous of all sports of the vicinity. Chicken fighting and men fighting was largely practiced.

Pacolet was first called Buzzard's Roost...because of the extensive cockfighting trade that went on in the vicinity of Tolleson's Tavern. The defunct roadhouse dated to the late 1700s and was located near U.S. Highway 176 just outside the western town limits.
