In the following data, the Elizabeth City Co. court certified that Robert Dudley (Lieutenant) died during the Revolutionary War, leaving an only son, Ambrose. I give the data just as it appears in the documents on file in the Land Office.

There were two Lieutenants Robert Dudley as evidenced on page 236, Elizabeth City Co. court, July 30, 1870. Ordered certified that upon evidence of Frederick Vincent, filed herewith, in affirmance of an order or certificate of heirship, heretofore granted by it, and since burned or destroyed, and also as an amended order, that Robert Dudley, a Lieut. of Va. State troops on the Contl. Line, died during the Rev. war, intestate and leaving an only son, named Ambrose. That Ambrose Dudley many years afterwards died intestate, leaving an only daughter his heir. That she married Eli Johnson and surviving her husband, died intestate, leaving a son Eli Johnson who married Eliza Boggs, and both dying intestate, left two daughters surviving them, named Sarah Elizabeth and [p.236]
Caroline Frances, now residing in the county of Nansemond, and are sole surviving heirs at law of Lieutenant Robert Dudley. The court further certifies that the said Sarah Elizabeth Johnson and Caroline Frances Johnson are loyal citizens of the United States, since and long anterior to the late war which commenced in 1861, and were at all times opposed to and in favor of its suppression. True copy, William S. Howard, Clerk, Elizabeth City Co. 25 July,1870.
