John Peden (1709-90), a patriot, too old for active service, aided in loading rifles and guns for the soldiers during the battles. He was born in Broughshane, Ireland; died in Chester, S. C.

William Peden (1749-1817) served, 1776-83, as private in the South Carolina Line. He was born in Ireland; died in South Carolina.
Thomas McCalla served in the Jersey campaign and was captured while fighting under "Sumter" in South Carolina. The courage of his wife, Sarah, in procuring his release places her among the heroines of the Revolution. He was born in Ireland; died, 1811, in Charleston, S. C.
James Armstrong (1764-1837) served as private in the South Carolina [p.57] troops, under Gen. Francis Marion. He was born in Salem, S. C.; died in Maury County, Tenn.
Katherine Fisher Steel showed no less the true heroism of her character, after peace, than in the darkest hour of the struggle for independence. She removed with her husband from Pennsylvania to South Carolina, 1745, where, in 1785, she died.


William Frierson was captain at the battle of Kings Mountain. He was born, 1732, at Williamsburg District, S. C.; died in Maury County, Tenn.
