Note: This record proves that Roland (Rowland) Thomas married
Mary (Gregory) Taylor sometime between 1698 when James Taylor,
Sr., died and 1700.
On 25 April 1702 Rowland Thomas “of the County of King & Queen”
received a land patent of 100 acres of escheat land (formerly
owned by John Arnold) in King & Queen Co., VA (Patent Book 9,
page 464).
On 16 June 1727 Rowland Thomas “of King & Queen Co., VA”
received a land patent of 1000 acres (new land) in Spotsylvania
Co., VA on the North side of the Northanna River in St. George’s
Parish, adjacent to Christopher Smith and Holladay’s Swamp
(Patent Book 13, page 151).
Holladay’s Swamp belongs to John Holladay as per 28 September
1728 land patent to Christopher Smith (Patent Book 13, page 306)
In 1728 it was also adjacent to Mr. Moore.
Mr. Moore is Mr. Augustin(e) Moore as per a 16 June 1727 land
patent to John Holloday “of King William County” (Patent Book
12, page 94). Also adjacent at this time was James Taylor.
On 28 September 1728 Rowland Thomas “of King & Queen Co., VA”
received a land patent of 1000 acres (new land) in Spotsylvania
Co., VA on both sides of blew water run in St. George’s Parish,
adjacent to Capt. John Taliaferro, Maj. William Todd, Roger
Tandy, Capt. Robert Pollard (Patent Book 13, page 373)."
Old Churches Ministers, and Families of Virginia. Article LV:
"Right Rev. and Dear Sir:--Since I wrote you some days since, a
few items of interest in relation to this parish have come to my
hands. A single leaf, and that somewhat mutilated, of the old
vestry-book of St. Thomas parish, was found among the papers of
one of my communicants who died last week, and has since been
handed to me. From this I am able to ascertain who composed the
vestry as far back as 1769. The record states:--'At a vestry
held for St. Thomas parish, at the glebe, on Friday, the 1st day
of September, 1769, present, Rev. Thomas Martin, Eras. Taylor,
James Madison, Alexander Waugh, Francis Moore, William Bell,
Rowland Thomas, Thomas Bell, Richard Barbour, William Moore.'
The object of their meeting was to take into consideration the
repairs necessary to be made to the house and other buildings
connected with the glebe."
