Reynard probably purchased land in Charles City County south of
the James River around the time of his marriage in 1662. However
all the Charles City County deeds have been destroyed so it is
not possible to identify exactly where he lived while raising
his children. The 1663 Bennington power of Attorney mentions
Mays and Coleman who are later associated with lands near
Bailey's Creek which flows northeast of Petersburg Virginia.
Just before his death he does obtain a patent in the headwaters
of Blackwater River which reach just short of the Bailey Creek
area. It is unlikely he had enough time to do much with that
late acquisition of land. His daughter Frances marries John
Herbert whose plantation was also in this vicinity. It is
important to note that his sons all obtained land by 1704 along
Bailey Creek just northeast of current Petersburg and it is
likely that this came either from their father or from
associations with their brother in law John Herbert. Because the
sons received differing shares of their fathers estate it
appears his will was probated but has been lost due to civil war
distruction of records.
It is unproven that James Anderson was an elder son of Reynard
born between 1662 and 1668. James was apparently deceased before
the 1689 record naming the sons and therefore was not named. I
am looking for evidence that Matthew acted as the guardian of
James' infant children because they were underage at the death
of their father. In tracing the family there is a greatgrandson
in James' branch named Reinard. I am still seeking proof, other
than the one 1711 court record that the son James existed.
Because James is not mentioned in the 1689 suit naming the sons
considerable closure could be obtained by dismissing the son
James and placing his children as Matthew's but I have not done
so because the 1711 record specifically identifies Matthew Jr.'s
father as James and that he is deceased. Matthew, Sr. however,
was very much alive, so he could not be the father of the
siblings of Matthew, Jr.
