John Johnson John Alvis Personally appeared before me William O.
Winston ,Clerk of the county Court of the county aforesaid the
within named Joel Coatney the bargainor with whom I am
personally acquainted and who acknowledged that he executed the
within deed for the purposes therein contained witness my hand

Hawkins Co. Deed Book 15 p. 535-536 William Alvis to William M.
Alexander Registered 4th March 1837 This indenture made this
24th day February 1837 by & between William Alvis of the one
part, Senter, Crawford & White merchants of the town of
Rogersville of the second part & William M. Alexander of the
third part all of the county of Hawkins in the state of
Tennessee witnesseth that whereas the said William Alvis is
justly indebted to the said firm of Senter, Crawford and White
in the sum of fifty-four dollars in several notes of hand viz
one payable to the said firm of Senter, Crawford & White for
thirty-five dollars payable one day after date & dated the 27th
day of February 1837. It is understood the $35 note is not to
draw any interest, Also one other note for Eight dollars
executed to Samuel Pettybone payable twelve months after date &
dated the 12th day of March 1836 on which note is a written
assignment to the said firm of J.A. Blackburn dated the 20th
October 1836. Also, one other note for eight dollars payable to
the said Samuel Pettybone payable twenty months after date &
dated the 12 day of March 1836 on which is assignment to said
firm by J. A. Blackburn dated the 20th October 1836. Also, one
other note of hand for three dollars executed to John B. Finley
payable one day after date & dated the 16th day of April 1836 on
which note is a written assignment from said John B. Findley to
the said firm dated September 7th 1836 and the said William
Alvis being willing to indemify and secure the payment of said
sum or sums of money to the said firm, the said William Alvis
doth hereby bargain & sell unto the said William M. Alexander
the following described property viz one tract of land
containing four acres be the same more or less conveyed to the
said Alvis by Joel Coatney & whereon the said William Alvis now
lives also one other tract or Entry of land adjoining the land
of Pleasant Starnes-Also, ten head of hogs, all my household &
kitchen furniture consisting of two beds and furniture, two
pots, one chest, and all my cupboard ware & cupboard to have and
to hold the said tracts of land & personal property to him and
his administrators, upon this express trust however, should the
said William Alvis will and truly pay & satisify the said notes
with lawful interest then in or on before the 27th day of
February next then this deed to be void, but in default of such
payment the said William M. Alexander shall proceed to sell said
property at the residence of said Alvis after advertising the
same at three public places in said county ten days before said
sale and with the proceeds there of pay and satisify said debt
or debts and the expenses of said sale and the overplus if any
payable to the said William Alvis his heirs or assigns. In
meantime the property until called for by the trustee is to
remain in the possession of said William Alvis . In testimony
whereof the said William Alvis hath hereunto set his hand and
seal the day and date above mentioned under the eleventh line

Whereas, heretofore the Justices of the Peace for the county of
Hawkins was required by the authority of the Confederate States
of America so called to take the oath to support the
constitution of the so called Confederate States.
Hawkins County Minute Book Monday November 2, 1863 p. 4 It
appearing to the court that Jas. M. Sizemore and William A.
Alvis having been duly elected and conformed as Justices of the
Peace for said county of Hawkins, it is ordered that they be
qualified as such whereupon the said Jas. M. Sizemore and W. A.
Alvis appeared in open court and took the oath of office to
support the constitution of the United States of America and
also the constitution of the State of Tennessee as set forth in
the code.
Hawkins County Deed Book p. 315 William A. Alvis to Wilson
Johnson Registered the 18th day of November 1865 10 O'clock A.M.
Know all men by their present : Greetings, That I, Wm. A. Alvis
have this day bargained and sold and do hereby transfer and
convey to Wilson Johnson and his heirs for ever for the
consideration of three hundred dollars to me in hand paid the
receipt of which is hereby acknowledged all my right, title,
claim and in trust in a tract of land lying in the County of
Hawkins in the State of Tennessee, District #17 formally
belonging to Charles D. Alvis deceased, with all its right and
appertainances thereunto to have and to hold the same to the
said Wilson Johnson his heirs and assigns forever I do covenant
with the said Wilson Johnson that I am lawfully sized of said
land have a good right to convey to and that the same is
unincumbered I do further covenant and bind myself, my heirs and
representatives do warrent and for ever defend the title to said
land to the said Wilson Johnson his heirs and assigns against
the lawful claims of all persons whatsoever, this the 15th day
of November 1865. William A. Alvis Signed and acknowledged in
presence of: B. Vogle Attest: M. C. Lawson State of Tennessee
Hawkins County Personally appeared before me James Lackey, Clerk
of the County Court and for the County and State aforesaid
William A. Alvis the bargainer to the within, with whom I am
personally acquainted and who acknowledged that he executed said
deed for the purpose therein contained. Given under my hand at
office in Rogersville this 18th day of November 1865. James

May 7, 1866 Ordered by the court that W. A. Alvis, Thomas Smith,
and O. R. Levy Esq. be appointed commissioners to examine the
jail as to the security of the prisoners and their
accommedations and report to the court.
William A. Alvis' family lived in the big two story house on the
right after turning on to Caney Creek Road in Striggersville.
They lived there during the Civil War per conversation with Don
Alvis on 23 May 1984. He stated that the family hid their meat
to keep the solders from stealing it. They did take one of
their best horses for their use.
