ITEM 8th - Appoint son, ROBERT H. ENGLISH, Executor of my last
will & Testament this May 3, 1864 Wit: Benj Harris Signed:
Sampson English James E. Mathews James Mathews CODICIL Whereas,
I Sampson English did on the third day of May in the year one
thousand, eight Hundres & sixty four, sign & publish my last
will & testament. I did bequeath to my beloved children certain
negroes, and whereas by an Act of the Government, said negroes
have been declared free, therefore I desire that the settlement
of my worldly affairs, no consideration shall be had to the
negroes as property and that no one of my children shall refund
to my estate any money on account. Sept. 26,1865 Wit: Jas.
Mathis/Mathews Signed: Sampson English W.H.Harris A. A. Lowe
Probated: January Term of Court of Ordinary 1866 Jno. L. Parker,
Ordinary.
How can we reconcile the January, 1866 probate date of Sampson
ENGLISH's will with the 1875 tombstone date in the Englishville,
Macon Co.,GA cemetery? Is the 1866 date only for registering the
codicil? Or is the cemetery date just rong??
Today I have looked at the Will of Sampson English again on
microfilm and the date that it is written is unclear BUT the
Probate date is definitely January Term 1866. There is a
possibility that the Death Date on the tombstone could be 1865
rather than 1875 as stated in the book. As soon as I can, I will
go to the cemetery and look. Probably will be next week before I
can do this as it is approximately 20 to 25 miles from my house
but I will check it for you as soon as I can.
Davine
Sampson English was my Great Great Grandfather and I've visited
the grave recently. The date of death on the gravestone is
definitely 1875. My Grandmother, Mary E. Dykes told me prior to
her death in 1946 that her Grandfather died around the time of
her wedding in 1875. I can't Understand the probate date unless,
at that time the practice might have been to register for
probate when a new will or changes were made. Sampson English

English Date of Death by: Jack Lester Print Message On February
25, 1999, Millie Stewart, Guelda Hay and I, Davine V. Campbell
visited the English Family Cemetery in Macon County, Georgia. We
needed to confirm the death date on the marker. The marker shows
1875 [I took a picture of the marker] but I am now, thoroughly
convinced that
he actually died in 1865 since his Obituary appeared in the
Upatoi Baptist Association Minutes of Sept. 8, 1866 and the fact
that he does not appear in the 1870 census with his family. In
addition, his Will was probated in the January Term of Court of
Ordinary 1866 by John L. Parker, Ordinary.

See Article in VA GEN v. 41, No. 1, 1997; By Margaret
Amundson's, "Who did Elizabeth Taliaferro, daughter of Robert
Taliaferro and Margaret French, marry?"
Also, "The Taliaferro-French Connection" by Margaret Amundson,
in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, v. 81 No. 3,
1995 which has primary evidence on Robert Taliaferro III
(1688-1768).
MARGARET S. STUBBLEFIELD ([email protected]) is a subscriber to
MOORE NEWS and collected the below information which she sent to
Taliaferro times.
****Since you edit the Taliaferro Newsletter perhaps you would
be interested in this.
My Rice Moore, probably son of James, who was born 1730 or
before, married Elizabeth Madison in Halifax VA. She was the
daughter of Roger Madison, b before 1714, and Elizabeth
Taliaferro who were probably married in Caroline Co. Elizabeth
T., b about 1710, was the dau of Robert Taliaferro III and
Margaret French, dau of Hugh French & Margaret ( ) Prosser
Miller. Robert T. III was the son of Robert Taliaferro II and
Sarah Catlett dau of Col. John & Elizabeth Underwood. Robert
Taliaferro II was the son of Robert I and Catherine Debnam dau
of Wm. This info is not my personal research but rather taken
from recent articles in THE VIRGINIA GENEALOGIST.
Roger Madison left a will, where we learn that he had one dau
named Margaret French Madison, who never married. He also had 3
grandsons with the first name of Taliaferro, 2 mentioned in the
will. He left a slave to each of his daughters & household
goods to Margaret and the rest to his only son Ambrose.
Roger was apparently the youngest son of John Madison & Isabella
Minor Todd, who were g grandparents of the President.. I did
call the Roger Madison will to the attention of one of the major
T. researchers and I also have a draft of a book on Hugh French.
