A widower who d. 1781. John Holloday 3, (John 2, Sr. Gent. Thomas 1.) was born about 1728. His will in Spotsylvania County proved April 8th, 1781. Ex. bond dated November 15th, 1781. Ex. bros. Joseph and Benjamin, wife, Tabitha 2nd wife), sons William and Benjamin, daughters, Lucy, Anna and Elizabeth. Mentions four children of Elizabeth, wife of John Penn, also son John by first wife, Elizabeth Rawlings (Daughter of James Rawlings, who died 1757).


Deed January 16th, 1749: "John Holloday of St. George Parish and Elizabeth, his wife, to Thomas McGee, etc."



Deed August 16th, 1770. "John Holloday and Elizabeth, his wife, of Spts. County to their son, John Holloday, junior, Deed of gift".


Deed November 21st, 1771. "John Holloday, senior, and Elizabeth, his wife," and again in 1776, (All children must have been by first wife.)


Then in 1777, December 13th, (p. 336) we find "Tabitha Gatewood, widow, and John Holloday, widower, to William Golson in trust, for use of the Gatewood and Holloday etc.
Tabitha Gatewood, widow of Henry Gatewood, was the daughter of Joseph and Susannah Collins. He died August 1759. Will dated November 1st, 1757. Henry Gatewood died January 28th, 1777. Sons, Richard. Dudley, Henry, William and Anne, his wife, Peter and Larkin. Daughters, Keziah Sandridge and Dorothy Foster.


Deed (p. 348) September 10th, 1779. John Hollodday and Tabitha, his wife, of Spts. County, to James Tate, etc. Witness, John Holloday, junior.

"William Mayo and wife Martha Johnson who left the Nottaway Swamp in Virginia sometime between 1737 and 1742 and made their way to Bertie County North Carolina Some of their children settled in Pitt County and later Edgecombe.


August 26, 1737, William Mayo Jr. witnessed a Will of George Williams of Nottoway Swamp


By 1742, William Mayo Jr. seemed to have settled in North Carolina.


National Society of the Colonial Dames, op. cit. p. 140:
February 1742, William Mayo Jr. gave to George merriell, Jr. "for love" a parcel of land lying in the Blackwater of Dumping Island. William's sister had married a George merril. The George Merril named i the deed was either her husband or her son.


Beaufort County, North Carolina 1759:
left his property as follows:
to wife, Martha, use of the home Plantation, large bay horse, hogs and cattle.
to son, William Mayo III, the baby horse, "Saddle Cloth"
to son, James Mayo, the bay horse "Runing in the Island"
to son, Peter Mayo, the horse, "Champion" and half the new land survey.
to son, John Mayo, "Bright Bay Mare" and her colt
to son, Nathan Mayo, the dark bay "Stallion" and reversion in one bed on the Plantation.
to daughter, Martha Hattaway, five pounds.
to daughter, Elisabeth Hearn, five pounds.
to daughter, Anne Chek (Cheek), five pounds.
to daughter, Mary Cobb, 10 shillings.
to grandson, William Mayo, son of William Mayo, other half of new land survey, my gun, black breeding mare, bed and furniture.
