  11.  William EDWARDS

Notes

"From Nancy Bowlby:
1. My records show Richard Edwards Sr. lived in Scituate Town, RI in 1790 ( from the 1790 Rhode Island Census). At the time he had 1 white male < 15 yrs and 1 white female < 15 yrs living in his household (in addition to his wife and himself). I don't know who the male was but I believe the girl was his daughter Elizabeth (born 16 September 1789).

2. As I said in my earlier email, I believe Richard was a Quarter Master in the 4th Brigade - Kent County in May 1806, June 1807, May 1808, June 1810. My reference is: New Index to the Civil and Military Lists of Rhode Island, compiled by Joseph Jencks Smith (1907).

3. This is further supported by the 1810 Rhode Island Census which shows Richard Edwards living in Coventry, Kent Co., Rhode Island, and the 1820 Rhode Island Census that shows Richard Edwards living in East Grenwich, Kent Co., RI.

4. Many of the dates I have in my research have come from the Vital Records of Rhode Island (as transcribed and published in 1891). There are several volumes and I found the following dates for the children of Richard and Mary in the Vital Record of Rhode Island 1636 - 1850, First Series, Births, Marriages and Deaths (Vol. 1 East Greenwich, Part II), by James N. Arnold which was published under the Auspices of the General Assembly in 1891:

East Greenwhich, Kent Co., RI deaths/births:
Edwards, Elizabeth of Richard and Mary - Sept. 16, 1789
" Richard - April 8, 1791
" Mary - March 8, 1793
" Joseph - Nov. 25, 1793
" Hannah - Sept. 3, 1795
" Mahala - May 16, 1790
" Mary - March 24, 1802
" Thomas - April 2, 1806
" Cynthia Carey - Jan. 1809 (birth/death?)
" John - Jan. 1809 (birth/death?)
" William - Jan. 1809 (birth/death?)
" Mary, wife of Richard, died June 10, 1828.**
The actual document reference to these transcriptions is "3-44" and "3-45". I assume these are the books with the original records... if you want to do further reference.

**Also, the last "Mary" is NOT the wife of Richard but his daughter, Mary, who was born 24 March 1802 and died 10 June 1828 - buried in West Grenwich, RI. - My reference to this fact is found on page 81 of the Rhode Island Vital Records, New Series (Volume 6) East Greenwhich and West Greenwich, Rhode Island Births from Probate, Grave, and Death Records 1680 - 1860, compiled by Alden Gamaliel Beaman, Ph.D. (1980).

5. The Vital Records of Rhode Island (Volume 10) contain church records from the early 1800s. On page 255 of that volume I found the following references to Hannah, of Richard, and Mahala (now Young), and Lucinda Edwards - admitted to the Maple Root Church of Coventry, Kent Co., RI, in 1814. Lucinda was "discharged Dec. 1844 to 'Noose Neck'" [whatever that is!!!!].

On page 244 of the April 1980 Rhode Island Genealogical Register I found reference to the will of Richard Edwards of East Grenwich, RI, advanced in age. "Will dated 3 Feb 1841, proved 31 August 1843, pgs 523-524. Mentions:
Wife- Mary Edwards
Sons- Richard Edwards of Penn, deceased;
Joseph Edwards of Penn;
Thomas Edwards;
John Edwards,
Daughters - Elizabeth Matteson, deceased;
Marcy Andrews, wife of Charles Andrews;
Hannah Harris, wife of Elisha Harris;
Mahalia Young, wife of Cyrus Young;
Mary Gardner, deceased
Cynthia Hade, widow of Hait Hade
Grandchildren - Eunice Gardner and Charles Gardner children of Mary Gardner, deceased
Unnamed Grandchildren-
Children of daughter Elizabeth Matteson, deceased
Children of son Richard Edwards of Penn, deceased."
