Jeremiah UPSHAW

ABT 1640 - ____

ID Number: I51960

  • RESIDENCE: 1667 Gloucester Co. VA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1640
  • RESOURCES: See: Notes Possible Father, not Proven [S746] [S2906]

Family 1 : Cordelia
  1. +William UPSHAW Gent.

Notes

Upshaw Coat of Arms: "Argent, an oak tree proper on a ground vert, over a wavy bend azure." According to Elsdon C. Smith's Dictionary of American Family Names, the surname Upshaw is locational in origin and meant "dweller at, or near, a stream." This and other sources placed the name originally in England.

Well, Hello Cousin, aka Becky's Mom, aka Josephine, It was good to receive your mail. I'll try to include as much as possible about the Upshaw's of Caroline County, Va. , of which I am one. Here goes.

The earliest, confirmed Upshaw is Jeremiah Upshaw, appearing as a headright in records of Colonial Gloucester Co., Va. in 1667. The name William Upshaw appears in the same records dated 1697. The Vestry Book 0f St. Peters Parish speaks of a John Upshiere whose daughter Tryphena was baptised April 13, 1707 and John Upshiere, Jr. died August 10, 1713.

The Upshur family is descended from the same lineage. Early (colonial/pre-colonial) spellings of Upshaw were Upshur and Upcher.

See more Upshaws at: http://mars.superlink.net/upshaw/familytree/tree.html
Thank you Tom.
