William II was in the Calfpasture River region of Augusta Co. as
early as 10 May 1746, for on that date he was appointed
Constable. It is probable that he was in the county at least a
couple of years prior in order to have become well enough known
to be appointed. On 27 Feb 1749, William purchased 490 acres on
the Little Calfpasture River from William Beverly (Augusta Deed
Bk 2:486). The farm was bounded by his brother Samuel's land on
one side and by James Stevenson on the other. The latter was the
father of Samuel Stevenson who married William's niece, Jane
Gay, d/o James Gay. Also located nearby on the Little
Calfpasture River were brothers John and James Gay. On the day
previous to William's purchase, he served as a witness to four
other deeds by Beverley. On one, he was a witness along with
James Gay; on another, with John Gay, both brothers of William.
On 9 May 1755, William wrote his will, naming Margaret, his
wife; eldest son John, the plantation George Campbell lives on,
formerly held by James Stevenson, to son Robert, plantation
testator lives on; to daughter Mary, to daughter, Agnes,
Executors, wife and brother John Gay. Teste: William Elliott,
Robert Campbell, James Stevenson. Proved 20 Aug 1755, by all
witnesses. Executors qualify with sureties: William Gay's
appraisement, 19 Nov 1755, was made by James Lockridge, Samuel
Hodge and Joseph Vachub (Walkup). (Note: James Lockridge was
father in law of Robert Gay I)."
