Jane Herbert WILKINSON Mother of Texas

23 Jul 1798 - ____

ID Number: I76519

  • RESIDENCE: MD and Natchez, Adams Co. MS and Bolivar Penisula, Richmond, TX
  • BIRTH: 23 Jul 1798, Maryland
  • DEATH: Bolivar Penisula, Texas
  • BURIAL: Richmond, Texas
Father: William Mackall WILKINSON
Mother: Anne Herbert DENT

Family 1 : James H. LONG
  1.  Mary Jane LONG

Notes

Anne's youngest child Jane Herbert Wilkinson (b 23 Jul 1798) is called the "Mother of Texas" and had a long and adventurous life. In 1815 Jane married James Long whom she met in Natchez as he returned from the Battle of New Orleans. In 1819 James Long and his small army went to Texas to seize control and Jane joined him later, giving birth to her third daughter, Mary James, on December 21, 1821, in Bolivar Penisula, Texas. Although Mary James died a few years later, she was (incorrectly) considered the first Anglo child born in Texas. In the meantime James had been captured at San Antonio in September and accidently killed in Mexico City in April 1822.
Jane was a successful businesswomen running a large, popular boarding house where she knew all the leading figures of the Texas Revolution and later had a large cattle ranch. She is buried in Richmond, Texas and on her gravestone is inscribed "Mrs. Jane H. Long, The Mother of Texas". About 20 books have been written about Jane Long, the most recent "Jane Long of Texas" by Neila Petrick.
