About 1794 Levin Wailes moved to Georgia to represent the
massive real estate interest of Robert Morris, the great
financier of the American Revolution. But in a few years the
business collapsed and Morris was in debtor's prison. But Levin
had been trained in Maryland as a surveyor and spent the next
ten years surveying Georgia. Numerous Maryland relatives and
friends moved to Georgia.
In 1807 Levin Wailes moved to the Natchez district because he
thought his opportunities for surveying would be very good
there.
In early 1808 his Maryland cousin Alexander Covington moved his
family and slaves over the mountains to Pittsburgh and down the
Ohio and Mississippi rivers to Natchez. As soon as Alexander
arrived in Natchez, his brother Leonard Covington started a
correspondence about the prospects of moving there because the
demand for tobacco was dead, the land was exhausted and
prospects of war with England were unsettling.
