No grant of land has been found for John Andrew Dehay, so he was
among the many French Huguenots who were artisans.
"The Church Act", Orange Quarter was constituted a parish for
the French under the name of "The Parish of St. Denis". This
was separate from the Parish of St. Thomas. This was formerly
the Huguenot Church of Orange Quarter. Its inhabitants were a
colony of an unknown number of families the first of whom came
to Carolina between 1680 and 1690. Save for the mechanical
lists of residents of this portion of Carolina, little can be
written concerning it. Among the names of French families in the
early records are many that are familiar in later decades.
T.H.S.S.C., V.66; St. Julien List, ed. 1888, 62f; Land Warrants;
Probate Court Records;, etc. "DeHay".
"No record has been found of the date of his death or place of
burial but an Inventory and Appraisement of his estate and
effects is dated January 26, 1760. There is also an Indent for
Revolutionary pay issued to the estate of Andrew Dehay for 25
pounds, 18 shillings for "Saddle trees and male pinions supplied
Col. Peter Horry's Reg."
Register of St. Phillip's Church by Smith 1754-1810 pages
148-159:
1. On 30 Oct 1757, John Andrew Dehay and Margaret Dringst,
widow, were married per banns by Rev. Richard Clarke.
2. On the 9th of June 1760, William Garns and Margaret D'Hay,
widow, were married per license by Rev. Robt. Smith.
From the two entries it would appear that Margarett Caroll Dehay
died, and John Andre married the Widow Dringst and after his
death (prior to Jan 26, 1760) Margaret D'Hay married William
Garns.
In Miscellaneous Law Records, book 83, B, page 496, there is the
Inventory and Appraisement of the Estate and Effects of John
Andrew Dehay, dated Jan. 26, 1760 and signed by Richard Bedon,
Stephen Cater and William Fuller.
