Margaret's mother died in 1919, and she returned home to keep
house for her father and brother. She married Berrien Kinnard
Upshaw in 1922. The marriage ended because of spousal rape and
was annulled in 1924. She started her career as a journalist in
1922 under the name Peggy Mitchell, writing for the Atlanta
Journal. She quit four years later after an ankle injury. Her
second husband was John Robert Marsh.
During World War II, Margaret was a volunteer selling war bonds
and volunteer for the American Red Cross. She was named an
honorary citizen of Vimoutiers, France, in 1949, for helping the
city get American aid after WW II. She died in Atlanta on August
16, 1949 after being accidentally struck down by a speeding
