Bible pages, labeled only "Compton Bible" My father was very
good about noting where he got something but in this case he
didn't. They are hard to read but were written in the 1700's.
Actually I think they're valuable to us because they support our
conclusions. A sentence in these Bible pages leads me to
believe someone was giving names of ancestors for someone who
followed - "The above Matthew Compton and Susanna his wife were
your Great Grandfather & Grandmother" The writing looks quite
old and it may not have been a Bible but a Family Record.
Matthew Compton, Sr. died testate 1745, Charles Co. Son Samuel
Compton that portion of the estate in Virginia in which he is in
possession, and 2 shillings.
Daughter Susanna Whitely 2 shillings.
Daughter Elender Slye 2 Shillings.
Grandson Mathew Compton Parker 2 Shillings
Son Matthew residue of estate.
Signed by the testator on 19 March 1744/5 and proved in Charles
County on September 5, 1747, by George Briscoe and William
Howard. From the Harry Wright Newman Collection: Ref: Wills,
Liber 25, folio 150, Hall of Records, Annapolis.
"Court records in Charles County, Maryland, just across the
Potomac River from Fairfax County, Virginia, help identify
Susanna Whitely's background. She was the daughter of Matthew
and Susanna (Briscoe) Compton and the granddaughter of Philip
and Susannah (Swan) Briscoe. In 1740 Matthew Compton named his
daughter Susannah Whitely in his will.
The same year, Susannah Briscoe, widow of Philip, willed her
"granddaughter Susannah Whitely a warming pan and to the
remaining children of my daughter Susannah Compton one shilling
each". Matthew Compton's will is in Will Book AC 4 page 235,
and Susannah Briscoe's will in the same book on page 116. Other
wills in these families tie the relationship together".
LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF MATTHEW COMPTON
dated March 19, 1744/45, proved 5 Sept 1747.
In the name of God, Amen. Matthew Compton, Senior of Charles
County, in the province of Maryland being in good health and
memory blessed be God but considering the frailty of this life
and that all flesh must yield when God by death calls, do make
this my last will and testament. In manner and form following
publishing all other former wills by me made incomplete.
Item - I commit my soul to God that gave it to me for its future
happiness through the merits of my Creator and merits of my
Redeemer Jesus Christ my body after my decease. I commit to the
earth till resurrection to be burried as my Executor hereafter
to be named shall think fit and for what wordly goods God hath
been pleased to intrust me with, after just debts and funeral
charges being paid, I dispose of the same as followeth:
Item - I give and bequeath to my son Samuel Compton all that
part of my Estate he is possessed with in Virginia and also 2
shillings sterling in bar that he shall not claim any other part
of my Estate.
Item - I give and bequeath to my daughter Susanna Whitely 2
shilling sterling in bar that she shall not claim any other part
of my Estate.
Item - I give and bequeath to my daughter Eleanor Slye 2
shillings, sterling in bar that she shall not claim any other
part of my Estate.
Item - I give and bequeath to my grandson Matthew Compton Parker
2 shillings, sterling in bar that he shall not claim any other
part of my Estate.
All the rest of my Estate both reall and personal both houses,
lands, goods and chattels, I give and bequeath to my son Matthew
Compton and his heirs forever whom I constitute, ordain and
appoint to be the Executor of this my last will and testament.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this
19th day of March, Anno Domni 1744/45. Signed sealed published
and declared by Matthew Compton lent to be his last will and
testament.
In presence of us.
Geo. Briscoe and
Wm. Howard.
On the back of the foregoing will was endorsed the following: To
wit, Charles Co. on the fifth day of September 1747 came Geo
Briscoe and William Howard, the subscribing witnesses to the
written will and made oath on the Holy Evangelists that they saw
Matthew Compton sign the written testament of writing and heard
him publish and declare the same to be his last will and
testament and that at the time of his so doing, he was to the
best of their judgments of sound and disposing mind and memory.

Hi Sheila,
I am descended from a MS Compton--who supposedly came from MD.
Stephen A. Compton, b. 1774,d.1843 in MS. I INTUIT that the
Matthew Compton family is the family that Stephen came from, but
have not been able to connect him to MD. One of these days!
I've visited around Leonardville, MD and Compton , MD. it looks
like the area where the Comptons settled in MS! There are some
Compton descendents in LA, who came through MS around 1800. I
think they are kin, too. Family given names are the same, just
as in the Matthew Compton family. Even plantation names are the
same! Maybe one of these days we will know that we truly are
CUZINS. Anne Heinle my family.com compton.
