  3.  John Horace UPSHAW

Notes

"children: Jeremiah, William Jr., John, Forrest, Richard, Hannah, Cordelia, Susanna, Sara, Ann, Margaret. He was living in Petsworth Parish, Gloucester Co., VA in 1699 and he was elected Overseer of Highways for that county around 1700. He was Churchwarden for the years 1703-4 and 1707-8. He was replaced as Vestryman on 2-5-1714, indicating that that is about when he moved to Essex Co., having bought 1000 acres of land there in 1699 from Harry Beverly of Middlesex Co. for £100 sterling. Between 1700 and 1717, many families relocated to Essex, including the Roanes, Reynolds, Crittendens, Upshaws and Wallers.

In 1704, he still held 490 acres in Petsworth Parish, Gloucester Co. in addition to his Essex acreage. The Gloucester land was in the northern part of the county, towards the Piankatank River and adjacent to Middlesex Co.

On 4-10-1704 he subscribed the Test denying that there is any Transubstantiation of the elements of bread and wine in the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper. He was Vestryman of South Farnham Parish, Essex Co., and was recommended as a Justice of the Peace. He asked on 7-21-1719 for time to consider it, and he eventually took the oath on 8-18-1719.

The inventory of his estate after his decease included a "parcel of old books", some of which had been bequeathed to him by his friend Capt. Leonard Tarrant in 1718."

"Interestingly, he had a grandson named William UPSHAW DAVIS.
* There are three descendants in the lineage from William Upshaw since two instances of marriage within the family occurred. Lucy Roane is thus descended from both Sarah and Margaret Upshaw, and Lucy's son Samuel W. Upshaw is descended from all three."
