Mother: RACHEL LINDSAY |
Mr. Whyte found in the Scottish records that Sir Hierome Lindsay
and his second wife Agnes Lindsay had dau Rachael (1612-1645)
who married 1640 Lt. Col. Bernard Lindsay (1603-after 1646) of
Lochehill, SCT, a distant cousin. Therefore, both Helen and
Robert Lindsay were grandchildren of Sir Hierome Lindsay.
Robert was also a great grandson of Sir David Lindsay of The
Mount.
A close relationship did exist between Rev David Lindsay and
Robert Lindsay, possibly related to the fact that Robert's
mother died immediately after his birth and his father was
engaged in military service, and Rev David may have undertaken
to raise Robert in his home and brought Robert to Virginia with
him.
p. 76 Fourteen years after the death of the minister, 1681, the
records of Northumberland Court House show that a "Robert
Lyndsay of Cherry Poynt was a resident". This is proof he lived
near the minister as the minister's home was in Cherry Poynt in
this county.
"Robert Lindsay made oath concerning a statement of one Richard
Thompson who circulated a malicious and scandalous report about
the wife of Mr. David Lindsay, for which he was indicted and
convicted by Court." Northumberland Court House Records,
January 1665.

Subject: Re: [LINDSAY] Confused Lindsay DNA
Date: Tue, 10 Jun 2003
"The "famous" case I referred to, which is familiar to many
genealogists interested in Linds*ys, involves the early Virginia
settler Robert Linds*y (born 1641), progenitor of one American
branch of the family. For well over a century he was widely
assumed to be the son of the Reverend David Linds*y (1603-1667).
More recently, one of my cousins hired an eminent genealogist
who determined that Robert was actually the son of Rev David's
half-sister Rachel Linds*y (1612-1645) and her husband Bernard
Linds*y (born 1603).
If this scenario is in fact correct (and I understand it's now
generally accepted to be so), then Robert's Y-chromosome DNA
would have come from the less prominent Bernard, whose exact
lineage is apparently uncertain, rather than from the line of
wealthy noblemen to whom it was previously attributed.
Their genetic contribution would have been passed through
Robert's mother instead, thus not affecting his Y-chromosome
DNA."
