Warner Rogers EMail: [email protected] wrote: I have 2 letters
written to Col. W.H. Cockfield in 1860 and 1861 asking for
written approval to the Executive committee for formation of the
Pee Dee Home Guards out of Plantersville, and a Volunteer Rifle
Company out of Georgetown. (I have several names listed in these
letters, if anyone is interested.) This Col. Cockfield also has
another letter addressed to him in 8/1861 as follows:
Col. William Hamilton Cockfield
31st Reg. SCM
Natural Grove P.O., SC (postmarked thru Georgetown)
Was there such a regiment? Was it a volunteer militia? Did they
merge or enlist later?
There is another reference to him as enlisting 5/5/1864 (age 47)
in the Williamsburg Co. Confederate Enlistment Rolls. Why the
discrepancy in times here? Does it have something to do with
going from volunteer status to enlistment? Also, Ancestry.com
lists a William Cockfield as being part of Gasque's Regiment,
which I presume is Marion Co. I do not know if they are the
same.
My page dedicated to the 1864 units is at
http://freeweb.pdq.net/Bil_Brasington/SeedCorn.htm the 8
battalions (Senior Reserves) raised in May and the 4 regiments
(Junior Reserves) raised in November, 1864. There is also a
great deal of information there on Columbia Military Prison
(Camp Sorghum) used to house Union Officer POW's in 1864-65. I
also have a page dedicated to all of SC's reserves, state troops
and militia of the 1860-1865 prtiod at
http://www.geocities.com/screbels_1864/SC_Militia.html
I welcome any information about these units and any personal
information about the troops (date and location of birth,
enlistment, service, discharge, death and burial), I plan to
publish this data in hardback form when I retire so the
sacrifice of these men will not be forgotten. I can be reached
