Hon. Thomas METCALFE Gov. of Kentucky

20 Mar 1780 - 18 Aug 1855

ID Number: I102361

  • TITLE: Hon.
  • OCCUPATION: State Legislature and 1828 Governor.
  • RESIDENCE: Fauquier Co. VA and Nicholas Co. KY
  • BIRTH: 20 Mar 1780, Fauquier Co. Virginia
  • DEATH: 18 Aug 1855
  • RESOURCES: See: notes Bio

Notes

#10398: The Biographical Encyclopaedia of Kentucky, J. M. Armstrong & Company, 1878, Cincinnati, Ohio. Gov. Thomas Metcalfe was born March 20, 1780, in Fauquier County, Virginia. His father was a captain in the Revolutionary War, and, in 1785, emigrated to Kentucky, finally settling in Nicholas County.

Thomas Metcalfe received an ordinary English education, and at the age of sixteen was apprenticed to his brother as a stone-mason, and subsequently followed that trade for a number of years.

In 1812, he was elected to the Kentucky Legislature from Nicholas County, and was subsequently re-elected for several years; in 1813, raised a company of volunteers, and fought gallantly at Fort Meigs.

In 1818, he was elected to Congress, and was continually re-elected, serving in that body until 1828; in the latter year, was elected Governor, as the candidate of the National Republican party, defeating major William T. Barry; and his administration was characterized by wisdom and prudence. In 1834, he was elected to the State Senate from Nicholas and Bracken Counties, serving until 1838; served for several years as a member and President of the State Board of Internal Improvements, and, subsequently, filled the unexpired term of Hon. John J. Crittenden in the United States Senate. He died of cholera, August 18, 1855, at his home in Nicholas County. Gov. Metcalfe was one of the most valuable men that ever lived in Nicholas County; was possessed of uncommon intellect and force of character, and was one of the most naturally eloquent men of his day. In honor of him, Metcalfe County was named.
