Michael KING - b. England; d. perhaps by 1704, almost certainly
by 1716, probably in Nansemond Co., VA. (Michael does not appear
on the rent rolls of 1704 or Nansemond Co., although his five
sons do.) Michael, reportedly from Norwich, Norfolk Co.,
England, sailed for America, being transported for service to
John WRIGHT of Nansemond Co., VA. Michael received three land
grants totaling 1800 acres in Nansemond Co. in 1667, 1671, and
1675. Purchases by Michael include a large copper still, and (in
1686) a plantation and slaves in Nansemond Co. On his
plantation, located on Somerset Creek, he built the first brick
house in the county. Michael married in VA.
Elizabeth HIRY - Her surname source, the Bible record of great
grandson Solomon, is very indistinct, and may be HAIRY, HARE,
WARE, etc.
Children of Michael and Elizabeth King
1. Nathan - b. about 1674. Owned 700 acres in Nansemond Co., VA,
according to rent rolls of 1704. He appears to have left the
Nansemond Co. land about 1695 and settled at the mouth of the
Roanoke River, where he had been living for 12 years in 1707.
2. John - b. about 1675, Nansemond Co., VA; d. after Jan. 13,
1735, the date of his will written in Elizabeth City Co., VA.
The estate settlement was entered Jul. 22, 1742. His estate
papers contain a statement of a legacy left by "Mr. Michael
King, of Nansemond" to John's sons Charles and Armistead. John
was a physician, and several of his accounts are on file at the
Court House at Edenton, NC. He was also sheriff and justice of
peace (1721-1722), and Capt. of Militia (1724) in Elizabeth City
Co., VA, and owned land in Elizabeth City Co. and Nansemond Co.,
VA, and in Chowan Co., and Gates Co., NC. John married first, in
1695 in Elizabeth City Co., Winifred CONNER. He married second,
Jane, and third, about 1719, Rebecca MOSS (d. 1758), daughter of
Edward MOSS (d. 1716) of York Co., and widow of Maj. William
ARMISTEAD (d. 1715), by whom she had sons Edward and Robert, and
daughters Judith and Mary. Note: There are conflicting reports
of the order on John's first and second marriages. Children of
John and Winifred: Elizabeth; Mary married Mr. CARY; Michael
married Jane; William married; and John married first Anne.
Children of John and Rebecca: Armistead married Mary; and Capt.
Charles (d. 1761) married Elizabeth TABB, daughter of Thomas and
Mary (ARMISTEAD) TABB of Elizabeth City Co.
3. William - d. about 1747; will proved May 1747, Nansemond Co.,
VA. In Apr. 1694, he became half owner of 840 acres of land in
Nansemond Co., VA, with brother Michael. William received 520
acres of land in Chowan precinct, NC by 1728, his sons Henry and
Charles moving to this land. William married twice, his second
wife being Mary CURLE (d. 1778), daughter of Joshua (son of
Pasco) and Rosea (or Sarah?) CURLE of Elizabeth City Co., VA. In
her will dated Oct. 11, 1778, and proved Dec. 24, 1778, Mary
mentions her children Mary, Rosea, and William, and grandson
Thomas KING. Children of first marriage: Capt. Charles (d. 1762)
married Mary; Henry (d. 1771); and Mary (d. 1774) married Mr.
HARE. Children of William and Mary: Mary married Mr. HUDSON;
Rosea married Mr. LATIMER; and William married Hannah CURLE
(whose will was dated Mar. 22, 1796).
4. Michael - d. by 1736; estate settled 1737. In Apr. 1694, he
became half owner of 840 acres of land in Nansemond Co., VA,
with brother William, for transporting seventeen persons to the
colony. The land bordered that of brother Nathan. Son John
obtained 443 acres of land in 1716 beginning at that of his
"father, Michael King." Sons of Michael: John, Henry, and
Charles.
5. Henry - b. Nansemond Co., VA; d. Apr. 16, 1716, Chowan Co.,
NC; will dated Feb. 24, 1714, and proved in 1716, Chowan Co.,
NC.
6. Elizabeth - "
