All children signed the settlement on first day of Jan. 1830 except Elias, who signed later in month of Jan. Capt. John was 78 when he died.
Both Capt. John and John Powell lent much money to the State of South Carolina during War of Rev. Capt. John served in War of Rev. under Francis Marion see Page 411 Bishops Greggs "Old Cherews"[Source 175] In Biography of grandson of John Powell found in Goodspeeds, "Memoirs of Mississippi", the statement is made that John Powell served in War of Rev. As yet have not found actual service beyond that of lending money and furnishing food for soldiers. James, the son of John, served in War of l8I2.

From: "Eight Generations of the Descendants of Allen Johnson," compiled by Harold R. Johnson, 1997:

John enlisted in the summer of 1775 in Captain Elias Dubose's Patriot Militia. After the fall of Charleston, John joined the ranks of General Francis Marion. John received his commission as Captain in 1782. At the close of the war, John returned to Darlington County, South Carolina. In 1792, John received land grants for land located near Byrdtown, Darlington County, South Carolina. John's plantation had a total of 1120 acres and it was on this land that John Norwood built his home and raised his family. John Norwood continued his interests in public affairs and was appointed in 1799 along with his close friend, Alexander McIntosh of Society Hill, to represent Darlington County in running out the dividing line between Darlington and Chesterfield County. In 1812, John served on Darlington Citizens Committee, which was responsible for a number of resolutions and declarations on the county's political stand during the War of 1812. On October 22, 1825, Captain John Norwood signed his will in the presence of two of his grandsons, William E. and John A. Norwood, both sons of Samuel, and his neighbor Issac T. Wilks This will was probated on December 23, 1829 and is on file in the Darlington County, Courthouse. A monument was dedicated on April 12, 1969, the 195th wedding anniversary of John and Mary Norwood, at Byrdtown, Darlington County, South Carolina. The monument is inscribed with the following message:

Sacred to the memory of Capt. John Norwood his will proved Dec. 23, 1829 and his wife Mary Warren Norwood Departed this Life, Aug. 3, 1831: Married April 12, 1774

This monument stands in what was formerly the familiy burial ground of Captain John Norwood's Plantation. Erected in 1968."
