Lady ELFWYNN (Elfwina) Aelfwyn (Elfwine) of Mercia

0905 - ____

ID Number: I91376

  • TITLE: Lady
  • RESIDENCE: England
  • BIRTH: 0905
  • RESOURCES: See: [S3389] [S3557]
Father: AETHELRED Earl of MERCIA
Mother: ETHELFLEDA (Aethelflaed) Princess of ENGLAND

Family 1 : EDULPH of Wessex & Devon
  1.  LEOFWINE Earl of Mercia

Notes

The dominion of Mercia descended to her (Ethelfleda's) daughter and heiress, Elfwina (A.D. 920). This Chroniclers notice the right of Elfwina so precisely, as to leave no doubt concerning her claim; and the fact is of considerable value, in shewing, that, contrary to the practice of other Teutonic nations, the sovereign authority amongst the Anglo-Saxons might descend to a female; or, according to the Anglo-Saxon expression, which the French have adopted, "fall to the spindle side".
In this instance, however, the weaker heir was compelled to yield to a more powerful opponent, and one from whom no enmity could have been feared. Elfwina was conducted as a captive into Mercia by her uncle Edward, who was engaged in successful warfare against the Danes; and we do not hear anything more concerning her in history.

  2.  John GRIMES
  3. +Robert Kilgore GRIMES
  4.  Nancy Jane GRIMES
  5.  Mary Jane GRIMES

Notes

"In 1856, the family moved to Texas by wagon. Robert Kilgore told his children that he was in two Indian raids but it is unclear whether they happened on the trip to Texas or after they settled in Texas. When they arrived in Texas, they settled near Stony Point in Wise County. A short time later they moved to Double Springs in Tarrant County just north of where Mt. Gilead Church now stands. Double Springs had a store and a post office which eventually was moved to what is now Keller, Texas.

The Grimes family moved from there to a place on the Keller Grapevine Road known as the Aunt Saney (Sunney) Smith farm. They moved again when they bought 100 acres from the B. J. Foster survey. This land was just off the Keller-Grapevine Road five miles east of Keller. It was near what was once called Pattenville. A store west of it was called Jellico and a school nearby was called Lone Elm."
