  • OCCUPATION: farmer
  • RESIDENCE: TN; Cape Girardeau Co. MO
  • BIRTH: 2 Feb 1814, Tennessee
  • DEATH: 25 Oct 1871, Cape Girardeau Co. Missouri
  • BURIAL: Mt Hebron, Cape Girardeau Co. Missouri Mo
  • RESOURCES: See: [S2677]
Father: Isaac HOBBS

Family 1 : Sarah F. PENN

Notes

History of Southeast Missouri,p 766,"..Green B Hobbs,a native of Tennessee, who came to Missouri when a young man. After coming to the latter State he married Sarah F Penn, also a native of Tennessee, after which he located on a farm near Cape Girardeau, on the Perryville road. He improved the farm and resided there until his death about 1870.They reared a family of eleven children, of whom three sons and one daughter are living, all residents of Cape Girardeau County".

(PHOTOCOPY), "The Slave and Slave Owners of Cape Girardeau County by Shrum,"Greenberry Hobbs, a native of Tennessee, located on a farm on Perryville Road, near the city of Cape Girardeau, and resided there until his death, Oct 25,1871.
"He owned 5 slaves in 1850, and in 1860, 8 slaves and 1 slave house. Five of his 1860 slaves were male.
"Greenberry, as we shall see, was one of the county's leading tobacco growers. His farm in 1850 consisted of 175 acres of improved, and 85 acres of unimproved land, which then had a value of $1,000. His implements and machinery, however, were estimated to be worth
only $80. The value of livestock was given as $327, and included 6 horses, 2 mules, 4 milk cows, 4 work oxen, 2 other cattle, 12 sheep and 35 hogs. Farm products in 1850 were 200 bushels of wheat, 1,000 bushels of corn, 2,000 pounds of tobacco, 13 pounds of wool, 20
bushels of Irish potatoes, $15 worth of orchard products, homemade products worth $25, and $110 worth of animals slaughtered"
"Tobacco is a labor intensive crop, and his raising thereof probably accounts for his need, at that time, for five slaves"
"The 1860 census shows that he had added 75 acres to his farm, acquired an additional $70 worth of farm machinery, but had ceased to grow tobacco, or at least had no crop that year"
