Notes

CONFLICT: "One Hodges Family of Early Virginia" by Miss J. L. Hodges; Records of this John has been confused with John Hodges of Bladen/Cumberland/Long Bluff, Cheraw Dist/Darlington Co. SC line who migrated to Wilkinson Co. MS (my line).

COLONIAL & REVOLUTIONARY FAMILIES OF NORTH CAROLINA Page 228 John Hodges in following deed records was John, son of Richard. John was (presumably) father of John Jr. and may have been father of Howel, Robert, and Matthew Hodges for whom see "More Hodges Records for Beaufort and Pitt" Book 3, page 116:

"Beaufort Co., NC Oct. 2, 1752 John Hodges to John Ballard 400 acres by patent to Samuel Boatwell dated Nov 16,1744....beginning at a post on Chocowinity Bay....Witnesses: Thomas Daniel, Benj. Hodges.

Note: John Hodges received this land from will of his father Richard Hodges Apt. 16, 1752. (This land was not cut into Pitt County in 1760)

Book 3, page 115. Beaufort Co., NC Dec. 1752. John Hodges deed from Charles Finakin for sum of 25 lbs. VA currency, 140 acres....by patent in Edward Salter's name dated Oct. 1751 being and lying on north side of on a branch that makes out of Chocod....being the plantation John Hodges now lives on. Witness: Thomas Daniel, Henry Hodges.
(Book 3, page 273 shows that John Hodges Jr. sold above land to John Dixon in Sept. 1756)

Book 3, page 55 Dec. 1750. Beaufort Co., NC Deed to John Hodges Jr. from Samuel Hargrove--sum of 20 lbs. current money of VA. Beginning at a red oak at mouth of branch that makes out of Grindal Creek....land granted to Seth Pilkinton 14th Feb. 1739 and afterwards conveyed by said Pilkinton to Elias Hodges as by deed bearing date 11th March 1740....the said Samuel Hargrove....hath good right, title, & est of inheritance.... Witnesses: Benj. B. Hodges, Robert Hodges.

Book 3, page 272 shows that John Hodges Jr. for 20 lbs sold above land to Howell Hodges in Sept. 1756. Said land was conveyed by deed to Elias Hodges in March 1740. (Note: The north side of Chicod Creek is still in Beaufort Co., and a little west of south of the village of Chocowinity.)

Hodges, Rebecca Cherry: b c 1728 NC d. 3-1-1790 SC m. John Hodges PS SC.

John Hodges and Rebecca Cherry (dau of Lemuel Moye Cherry and Frances Ballentine). Children in will of 1778, Craven Co. SC: Rebecca, Elizabeth, Lemuel, Henry, Richard, Robert, and John who m. Anna Magee.
***********
CONFLICT: JOHN HODGES, SON OF RICHARD HODGES sold his Beaufort County, North Carolina land on 2 October 1752 (Deed Book 3 Page 116). He removed to Marlboro County, South Carolina to help his widowed mother (Hodges Family by Miss J.L. Hodges, Pitt County, North Carolina Library).

JOHN HODGES remained in Marlboro County, South Carolina with his widowed mother for the remainder of his lifetime and never did return to live in North Carolina. However, his younger brother, HENRY HODGES did remain during his entire life in Beaufort/Pitt Counties, North Carolina.

Again, the following genealogical data was furnished by Miss J.L.Hodges and I have not checked it out for correctness and no proof was given.

JOHN HODGES, SON OF RICHARD AND SARAH HODGES married REBECCA CHERRY, DAUGHTER OF LEMUEL CHERRY AND FRANCES BALLENTINE, AND PRODUCED THE FOLLOWING CHILDREN.

(1) John Hodges Jr. born ca-I747 in Beaufort County, North Carolina, married in Marlboro County South Carolina ca-1770 Anna Magee, daughter of James and Ann Peggy Ayer
(2) Richard Hodges, baptized 2 December 1753, he was in the American Revolution married
Elizabeth Magee
(3) Robert Hodges, died 1816 in Marion County, South Carolina married during 1779 Mary
Lide, daughter of Major Robert Lide and Sarah KoIb
(4) Lemuel Hodges
(5) Henry Hodges
(6) Elizabeth Hodges
(7) Rebecca Hodges, unmarried and died in 1784

I admire Miss Jessie's effort so many years ago! I do know that she never presented herself as a "professional genealogist," just simply a person working out her own family genealogy. As I understand, her work was one of the very first early Hodges' Family genealogical presentations submitted to the South Carolina Archives; and with her very correct background, she was accepted without question.

Now, under today's standards - quite a bit of her early genealogy is under question and it has been proven that she made a few serious mistakes throughout the presentation and her failure to identify the source of her findings. Secondly and perhaps the most critical, was a very bad habit of "making things happen" to conform with her preconceived opinion of events and people.. Her early work has been accepted by both the South Carolina Archives and by the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution; in fact, many ladies have used her genealogical interpretation and her collection of Revolutionary Archival Documents to secure membership into the National Society, DAR.

Miss Jesse was an unmarried schoolteacher who collected family information beginning back in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. She distributed her work throughout both Virginia and North/South Carolina into the archives of each state and you can receive a copy from The South Carolina Archives.

Capt. George Hodges was proven to be a son of John Hodges, Jr. and Ann Magee as per "The History of Marlboro County, S.C. by J. Thomas." Using the Diaries of Rev. Pugh, the listed children of John Hodges and Rebecca Cherry confirm the bible record of their children as Miss Jessie reported it to be: Richard, John, Jr., Robert, Henry, Lemuel, Elizabeth and Rebecca, Jr.

(1) John Hodges, Jr. who was born in Beaufort County, N.C. circa 1747. He married circa 1769, Anna Magee, a daughter of William Magee and Elizabeth Buckholts of Marlboro County, SC.

(2) Richard Hodges, who was born 1752 was baptized in the Church of England Parish, Prince Frederick Winyaw. He married on 21 October 1779, Elizabeth Magee, who was also a daughter of William and Elizabeth Buckholts.

From the St. David's Society in old Craven District, South Carolina: "The Diaries of Rev. Evan Pugh, 1762-1801, early PeeDee River area." His work has been transcribed by Mr. Horace F. Rudisill and has death report of both children of John and Rebecca Hodges; Lemuel and Rebecca (Jr.), one in August and other in September 1784.

During this same time frame, on the 2 October 1752, John Hodges (Sr.), a son of Richard and Sarah Hodges, sold his 400 acres of inherited land at Chocowinity Bay in Beaufort County, N.C. This deed does not mention a wife so we really do not know if John and Rebecca Cherry were married by this date or not? However, this is the last known document on John Hodges (Sr.) in Beaufort County, N.C.

The next proven mention of John Hodges (Sr.) was from Prince Frederick Parish Church in the PeeDee area of South Carolina: "Richard Hodges, a son of John and Rebecca, his wife, was baptized 2 December 1753, being then three weeks old."

My belief, without any proof, is that John Hodges (Sr.) and Rebecca Cherry were married just before he departed Beaufort County, N.C. in October of 1752. John was the recorded co-executor of the Will of his father, Richard Hodges; therefore, John was needed in South Carolina to help his mother with the settlement of Richard's Estate - thus the sale of his inherited land in Beaufort County, N.C.

It is very reasonable to believe that baby Richard Hodges who was born in South Carolina during November of 1753, was the first child of John Hodges (Sr.) and Rebecca Cherry - born some 12 months after they married and removed to South Carolina! Remember that Richard Hodges had just died, so it was doubly obligatory for John (Sr.) and Rebecca to name their first son after Richard Hodges!! Miss Jessie believed that John Hodges (Jr.) was born first and that Richard was born second, some six years later in 1753? Perhaps the actual birth ages were contained within the bible records and Miss Jessie was correct; otherewise, I am inclined to place Richard as the first born?

Conversely, the Revolutionary Pension Application of Philemon Hodges identified his cousin, John Hodges, of Long Bluff, South Carolina. Long Bluff was well established in Craven District along the PeeDee River - today this area is named Society Hill and is the first stop in Darlington County after crossing the PeeDee River from the road to Bennettsville in Marlboro County, South Carolina. This John Hodges was identified as being a recruiting officer for the Revolutionary Army and had brother's named: Edmund and Joseph (possibly others?) Hodges.

The known Will of Richard Hodges established that his two son's were: John Hodges, Sr. and Henry Hodges. Therefore, Miss Jessie's John Hodges, Sr. could not have been this same "John Hodges" with the brother's: Edmund and Joseph Hodges!!! The diaries of Rev. Evan Pugh prove the brother's of John Hodges, Jr were: Richard, Robert, Henry and Lemuel; thus again, the brother's do not match the one's recorded within the Revolutionary Pension Application!

At this point, I believe that we have proven there were indeed two different "John Hodges" residing in the Craven District area of South Carolina during this same time period! Perhaps with additional detail study these records can be sorted and assigned to the correct person or persons? [S484] [S799] [S899] [S899]
