Daniel CANDLER "the Immigrant"

____ - 1765

ID Number: I88032

  • RESIDENCE: Ireland and abt 1735 Charleston, SC and NC and Lynchburg, Bedford Co. VA
  • BIRTH: Belfast, Ireland
  • DEATH: 1765, Lynchburg, Bedford Co. Virginia
  • RESOURCES: See: [S3251]
Father: Thomas CANDLER
Mother: Jane TUITE

Family 1 :
  1. +William CANDLER

Notes

Will: 1765 Bedford Co.,VA. Hannah (Anna?) (Wife) b. in Ireland.

"Daniel was a well educated man, schooled in his homeland of Ireland. When he married Anna, an Irish girl, he was disowned by his family, so he and Anna decided to leave Ireland and come to the colonies. The family landed in Charleston, SC after 1736, as their eldest son William was born in Ireland. The family went to NC and then ended up in Lynchburg, VA where Daniel died.

According to Colonel William Candler of Georgia, by Allen D. Candleron page 42, Daniel Candler was not listed in History of the Landed Gentry, by Burke due to the fact that he had married an Irish woman. This to the English gentry had brought shame and reproach to his family and disqualified him to hold any place of honor or trust. "His family and friends were mortified and humiliated by his marriage into the proscribed race, and were ashamed of hm, and therefore, probably never mentioned him and tried to forget him. Realizing all this, he buried himself in the wilds of the new world to relieve them of his ungrateful presence." this did not keep him from remembering his family and homeplace as he named his children after his grandfather and his brothers, and his son named his son Zedekiah, named his estates and homes after the Irish lands which belonged to the Candler, Callan Castle inKilkenny Co. The fact that through his great grandmother he was related to the royal family exacerbated the problem of having married an Irishwoman. A commoner could be forgiven such a terrible social breach, but someone with royal ties be forgiven slowly."

Notes

"Prob. Son: Major Nelson Higginbotham, Jr. Prob. Son of Nelson E Higginbotham and Judith Ware b 20 Oct 1785, but she would have been 14 years old when he was born. He left Madison Co. GA and moved to Randolph Co. AL after 1835. "State of GA, Dept. of Archives and History, pg. 72, pg. 160, pg. 38 and pg. 49.

Children born in Madison Co. GA & Randolph Co. AL (now Cleburne Co. AL) between 1825 and 1844: CHILDREN: Burrell, Perry, Harriet, Talbert, William/Walker, Hulda, Avann, Rodann, Hamilton C. and Taylor Higginbotham."

Sanders Verner and Chester (Chesley?) Higginbotham were brothers, both the sons of John Wesley and Nancy (Evans) Higginbotham. John Wesley was the son of Perry and Martha (last name unknown) Higginbotham, who were early residents of Randolph county, Alabama (see 1850 &1860 federal census records). They lived in the area of Chulafinne, Alabama which became a part of Cleburne county in 1866. Perry Higginbotham was born in Madison county, Georgia ca 1826, the second son of Nelson and Lucretia (Beard) Higginbotham.

Nelson Higginbotham was born in Georgia on August 16, 1799. He married Lucretia Beard in Madison county, Georgia on October 5, 1820. Some believe he was the oldest son of Nelson and Judith Ware, who moved to south Louisiana. I believe his father was an unidentified son of Caleb and Mary Ann Higginbotham, who also lived in Madison county. His true identity is still unknown, as no substantial evidence has been found to prove his parents. Lucretia was born in June, 1800 and died in November, 1868. Nelson died in April, 1872, and both are buried in the Methodist Church Cemetery in Chulafinne, Alabama.

Perry Higginbotham is one of the ten living heirs named in Nelson Higginbotham's probate records in Cleburne county. Ref. Will book #1, pages 122 thru 125.

Earl Higginbotham: "The Taylor (Abram Taylor) Higginbotham who married Emily Dozier Strickland was the son of Tolbert Higginbotham- THE SON OF NELSON AND LUCRETIA - not Burl. They settled in Scurry county, Texas. I personally interviewed one of Abram Taylor and Emily's sons in 1965.

The Taylor (Abram Taylor) Higginbotham who married Emily Dozier Strickland was the son of Tolbert Higginbotham, and GRANDSON of Nelson and Lucretia Beard. Burl had a SON AND A BROTHER named TOLBERT. His brother Tolbert married Mary Adeline Kennedy December 11, 1851, and they had a son named Abram Taylor, who married Emily Dozier Strickland. Tolbert and Taylor Higginbotham, the sons of Burl and Armenta, apparently died young as they are not named in Burl's will." [S453] [S186]
