The original family consisted of Jacob Sr., Nicholas, Lewis, Jacob Jr., Frederick, and Andrew. Nicholas Winkler Sr. born about 1716 in either Switzerland or Germany. I do not know when he died but it was after the 1790 census. He was an officer in the Revolutionary War and was supposedly one of Marion's Men. His wife's name was Anna-Barbara ? .This Nicholas Winkler was of the original family of Jacob Winkler which came to Charleston, South Carolina in Dec. 1732 on the ship the Purrysburg. There are many listings of this passenger list, one that I know of is in a book called "New World Immigrants". Jacob Winkler and Anna-Catarina Winkler, parents and their childen, Andrew b.est 1715, our Nicholas b.est 1716, Eve Elizabeth b.est.1720, Jacob b. est 1721, Lewis b.est. 1724, and Frederick b. est 1729.


They were of the original settlers of Purrysburg and when they arrived there they didn't even have shelter! I have a list of the provisions given them if interested, also land records, I believe that they were rice planters. All of these recors are very hard to come by because of a records loss in Beaufort Co., S.C. just after the Civil War.


The names of Edwin's children that lived to adulthood are as follows.
George Howe Winkler, he was born in South Carolina and moved to New York.
Hermoine Evola Winkler, she was born in South Carolina and married a Dr. William Dudley Carter in Tippah, Mississippi.
Jesse McFarlane Winkler, was born in South Carolina and was married three times, once to George Bancroft, second to J.M.Love. and last to T.B.Boyd.
Cornelius Lawrence Winkler, born in South Carolina and lived in Camden with his wife Sarah Doby Kennedy.
Edwin Theodore Winkler Jr. born in South Carolina,moved with his family to Alabama in 1872 and was deceased by 1920.
Elizabeth Sarah Winkler, born in South Carolina, lived in Alabama and was deceased by 1920.
Alexander McFarland Winkler, born in South Carolina and living in Wilmington, Delaware in 1920.
Robert Brodie Winkler, born in Alabama,and deceased by 1920.
PORTER KING WINKLER, born in Alabama and lived in Virginia, was married to Amamda (Mamie) Powell. Deceased by 1910.
William Wilkerson Winkler, born in Alabama and deceased by 1920.
Caroline Cornelia Winkler, born in Alabama and married to Louis Judson Bristow in South Carolina. They finally made their home in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Benjamin Pressley Winkler, born in Alabama and married Millicent(Agnes) St. Hill, they made their home in Utah.
Hugh Adams Winkler, born in Alabama and lived in Virginia, and married Ethel Wallace.
