Mother: Mary Schuler OWENS |
The principal crop was cotton, and the cotton boll weevil left
him heavily in debt to the bank. During these hard times, large
portions of "The Elms" had to be sold. The first portion was
the lands now owned by the Thornly family. Next a tract of land
known as the Grayson Field was sold to his son-in-law, Harold H.
Harvey, Sr. Finally, another tract of land was taken by Santee
Cooper when Lake Moultrie was built. Today only a few hundred
acres and the old home is left of the original tract.
Josiah was also employed as a RailRoad Agent. During the height
of the worst malaria seige, he was the only white man to remain
in Moncks Corner, overnight. The rest moved to higher ground
every night in fear of fever.
Obit: 10 Mar 1952, died age 87 at home between Moncks Corner and
Pinopolis. Services by Rev James E. James and Rev Edgar West
and Rev A. E. Guyton of Holly Hill.
