Besides the son whom Malcolm killed, Boete had left also a
daughter, Gruoch, who married into the family of the Mormaors of
Moray, carrying her claims with her. Her husband, Gilcomgain mac
Maelbrigdi mac Ruaidhri, was slain in a family quarrel, but left
a son by Gruoch, named Lulach, an infant, who thus represented
the line of King Kenneth MacDuff. Gruoch next married Macbeth
mac Finley mac Ruaidhri, (second cousin to Gilcomgain) who had
succeeded to the mormaorship of Moray. By the hitherto prevalent
Pictish system of alternation, Lulach was the rightful king; and
as guardian and representative of his stepson, Macbeth stood for
the child's claims on the Scottish crown, as against Duncan, son
of Malcolm's daughter, Bethoc, by Crinan.3

The son married ELeanor SMITH in 1814 and had five children, of
whom two had descendants: Benjamin Luther SMITH, b. 1815, and my
gg-grandfather, Thomas Bell SMITH, b. 1817. I have been unable
to learn anything about Thomas Bell other than his marriage to
my gg-grandmother in 1840 in Jackson, LA; their purchase of a
hotel in Bayou Sara a few years later and his murder in 1851.
However, his daughter, Lucy Ann Smith ROBERTS, referred to him
as a prominent East Baton Rouge Democrat in a 1932
Times-Picayune interview. Therefore, I presume he lived in that
parish at least until his marriage.
His brother married Mary Ann DUTCH in 1836 and had two children,
one who married and left descendants: Mary Elizabeth, b. 1840,
married Joseph BARNETT in 1870. Their son Thomas Luther
BARNETTT, b. 1872, married 1892 to Lou SHAFIT, and they lived
either in East Baton Rouge or Baton Rouge.
John BAKER's sister, Patsey BAKER, was the first wife of
Josephus SMITH's brother, Luther L. SMITH, of Locust Grove
Plantation, West Feliciana Parish. Luther later married Anna
Eliza DAVIS, sister of Jefferson DAVIS.
