"Lemuel L. Penn was born in Fredericktown, Frederick Co., MD, on
May 4, 1812. He moved to Westmoreland Co., Pa., in 1832, where
he was a hatter by trade. In 1845, Lemuel Penn moved to West
Elizabeth, Allegheny Co., Pa.
Lemuel L. Penn served in numerous famous battles of the Civil
War. He enlisted into Co. "C", 13th Pa. Volunteer Infantry, on
August 6, 1861, and he served in this regiment until December,
1861. He then transferred to Co. "C", 102nd Pa. Volunteer
Infantry. This regiment began as part of the 3rd Brigade, 3rd
Division of the Fourth Corps of the Army of the Potomac, and he
served throughout the Peninsular Campaign under General
McClellan. This included the Seven Days Battles, Seven Pines,
and Malvern Hill, where the Fourth Corps did most of the
fighting. The 102nd Regt. of Pa. Vol. Infantry then became part
of the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division of the Sixth Corps of the Army
of the Potomac. Lemuel Penn was the detailed to the Ambulance
Corps, though he remained a member of Co. "C", 102nd. P.V.
Lemeul remained detailed to the Brigade and Division Ambulance
Corps for the rest of his service with the Army of the Potomac.
His regiment fought at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville,
Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and in
defense of Washington, D.C., during Jubal Early's Raid. Lemuel
Penn's enlistment expired in September of 1864, and he returned
home. The battles he participated in were some of the largest
and worse battles of the Civil War. This information has been
taken from the Official Histories of the War of the Rebellion,
which includes the duty rosters of the 102nd Pa. Volunteer
Infantry, and from his military records, obtained from the
National Archives.
Lemuel L. Penn's name is on the Pennsylvania Monument in the
Gettysburg Battlefield.
Organized the Odd Fellows Lodge in West Elizabeth. Their only
records indicate that he was a dues paying member.
The Elizabeth Herald ran a tribute for Lemuel Penn on March 27,
1896. No copies of that tribute are apparently available.
National Archives Soldiers Certificate No. 595101.
Applied for Civil War veterans pension on July 19,1890. The
pension was granted on April 24, 1891, with an effective date of
August 5, 1890. He received $12.00 per month. He enlisted on
August 6th, 1861 and was Honorably Discharged from the Army on
Sept. 3rd, 1864 at Charlestown, VA. Lemuel was a member of the
James Nolder Post of the G.A.R."
