"Ida was the eldest daughter of John Cole, M.D. and Nancy Smith. She married James Wesley Sandifer on Aug 21, 1916 in Tylertown, MS where they lived and farmed the land that James was born on. The family moved to Greenville, MS in 1927 and started sharecropping. They stayed here until 1944 with the remainder of their children being born in Greenville. After James and a couple of their sons moved to Mobile, AL for work, Ida and the rest of the children followed them there in Feb 1944.
The author says, "Ida was a gentle person and along with Jim had a family of 12 children (8 boys and 4 girls), raising 11 to adulthood. They lost on son (Dennis Ansell), to Pneumonia in Jan 1938 at the age of 7 months. Ida was a country cook that could make the best meals with the least of things. She could sew and made many of the childrens clothes herself. She also quilted and nursed many a sick person in her days. She had a great knowledge of home remedies, that she apparently gained from her father, which provided her the ability to raise her children through many tough times when the family could not afford a doctor.
She held a great love for her father and was so proud of the fact that he was a doctor and lived to be 93 years of age.
Ida died at age 94, on Nov 17, 1992 of Pneumonia in Mobile, AL and is buried in the Therrell Annex of the Whistler Cem. in Prichard, AL alongside her husband "Jim" who preceded her in death 33 years earlier. She was also preceded in death by three more children in addition to Dennis: Fannie (Mar 1, 1991), A.J. (May 1, 1987) and Van (Nov 8, 1987)."


Charles Sandifer (the author) says, "At this juncture in time I am unable to put into words what this great woman meant to me." Notes from Charles Sandifer, Aug 17, 1993."
