"Enlisted Apr 1861, Co F, 13th VA Inf, Early's Brigade, Ewell's
Division; lieutenant, Co E; wounded 12 May 1864, at Spotsylvania
C.H.; discharged same day. He took the wound at Bloody Angle and
it was devastating. A Minie ball passed through his left arm,
shattered and tore away his collar bone, passed through the
upper lobes of his left lung, and lodged somewhere in his back
but was never found (Confederate Veteran, Vol XXXIV, 1926, p.
429).

"Philip William Strother, was born at Washington, Rappahannock
Co., Va. Sept. 8, 1839, son of James French and Elizabeth
Roberts. From William Strother the line of descent is traced
through his son Jeremiah and wife Eleanor; their son James and
wife Margaret French; their son French and wife Lucy Coleman;
and their son George French Strother and wife Sarah Green
Williams, who were the grandparents of Judge Strother (Philip
William Strother). James French, father of the subject of this
paragraph, was a member of the Va. General Assembly, and speaker
of the house of delegates in 1847,"
(VI) Phillip Williams Strother, son of James French Strother,
was born in Rappahannock county, Virginia, in 1839. He was
reared in that county and Culpeper county, and located in Giles
county in 1867, where he has since resided, a most successful
lawyer.
He served in the Confederate army as lieutenant in the 13th
Virginia Infantry, and was desperately wounded in the Bloody
Angle at Spottsylvania Court House, May 12, 1864.
He cast his first vote in 1860, for Bell and Everett. He has
served on both branches of the general assembly of Virginia. He
was elected judge of the counties of Giles and Bland in 1870,
and reelected in 1874, but the jurisdiction of the court being
limited by legislation, he resigned.
A Republican in politics, he was a member of the national
convention of 1892, which nominated Benjamin Harrison; was an
elector-at-large for the state of Virginia on the Republican
ticket in 1896; declined Republican nomination for congress in
1894.
He married, January 3, 1867, Nancy Strother Pendleton, born in
Giles county, Virginia, in 1847.
