"General Howell Cobb, an Athens native who once had his eye on the U.S. presidency, was considered for the presidency of the Confederacy. A lawyer, before the War he was speaker of the U.S. House, governor of Georgia, and U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. He gave up a position in President Davis' cabinet to serve in the army. Although he did not become president of the Confederacy, another Georgian, Alexander H. Stephens, a long-time pre-war U.S. Congressman representing Georgia, became its vice president."

Governor Howell Cobb who lived in the Governor’s mansion in Milledgeville from 1851 to 1853 had seven children who lived beyond infancy. His children were John Addison, Lamar, Howell, Jr., Mary Ann Lamar (Jr.), Sarah Mildred, Andrew Jackson, and Elizabeth Craig. It is interesting to note that the male children were sent to educational institutions while the records of one daughter that are available indicate that a private tutor was employed for her education. While the grading scales differ in each report card, it is easy to surmise the academic strengths and weaknesses of each of the students. The letters that were written by Lamar Cobb from school and to family members reveal a portion of the everyday life of a child in the 1850s. In the letters, students can trace the growing maturity of the writer as well as his growing proficiency in his use of the quill and ink. It is interesting to point out to students that the grammar and the spelling of the writer is not perfect because he is learning to write. The two documents that address the boarding schools for "boys" and for "young ladies" are fascinating comments upon the educational standards of the time period. The subjects that are offered, the rules that are listed and the cost of the education are points which most students will find interesting and similar to some of their own experiences."

Notes

John was a soldier in the Civil War, while he was away, Sherman's troops marched through South Carolina. His wife Mary Shuler was left alone with a baby and an 11 year old child. At that time the family lived in a two-story house near Wassamassaw. When northern troops arrived at the home, Mary Schuler took refuge in one bedroom. She sat in a rocking chair with the child by her side, a baby in her arms, and a shotgun across her lap and refused admission to the northern troops. The troops sacked the house giving the clothes and furnishings to the negroes in the area. They wisely avoided the bedroom occupied by Mary Shuler. The locked chest pried open by the swords of the northern troops is still a cherished family possession. When John returned from the war, he became a telegraph operator and station master for the Coastline Railroad. The family moved to a home in Oakley, SC, located near the railroad tracks behind the old Herbert Dangerfield grocery store. [S306]
