Col. William WHITEHEAD settled in 1725 on a plantation called
"Spring Meadows" which lay on the south bank of the Roanoke
River. . . three to four miles east of Tillery, North Carolina .
. . The plantation was deeded to Tobias WHITEHEAD in 1750 and
went out of the WHITEHEAD name in 1798 when it was divided
between Tobias' heirs: Shields, Pitman, and Forte.
William was a miller in North Carolina and was married to Rachel
McKinney whose brother Barnaby had mills in both Virginia and
North Carolina. Millers abounded in the family thereafter.
Arthur I's land was inherited by his eldest son William who sold
the land in 1719 and moved south into North Carolina. William
was a major land speculator, merchant, miller, Colonel of
Edgecombe County , North Carolina Militia and his plantation was
on the south bank of the Roanoke above Scotland Neck. The
Colonel's third son was Lazarus; he lived in Nash County , North
Carolina. He accumulated large acreage, more than 3400 acres on
the north side of Swift Creek, south of the Halifax line,
adjacent to Edgecome County. . . Col. William WHITEHEAD settled
in 1725 on a plantation called "Spring Meadows" which lay on the
south bank of the Roanoke River. . . three to four miles east of
Tillery, North Carolina . . . The plantation was deeded to

pounds Virginia currency 320 acres more or less on the north
side of Beech swamp, joining POPE and the swamp. Wit: William
BYNUM, Robt. PITMAN. Reg. Aug. Ct. 1739. page 26: Col. William
WHITEHEAD of Edge. County to Ambrose PITMAN of Edge. County
planter 21 Aug 1739 16 pouinds Virginia currency 320 acres more
or less on the north side of Beech swamp, joining Philip RAIFORD
and the swamp. Wit: William BYNUM, Robert PITMAN. Reg. Aug. Ct.
1739.

by William Whitehead and Jacob Whitehead, adms., [no date].
Large inventory included estate at home plantation and at Swift
Creek; also sundry merchandise and accounts at the Swift Creek
Store. Cattle were at the plantations of Jacob Whitehead and
Arthur Whitehead, August Court 1750. Account of sale by John
Bradford, Deputy Sheriff, October 3, 1751. Buyers were Jacob
Whitehead, William Whitehead, Joseph Whitehead, Abraham
Whitehead, and Lazarus Whitehead, November Court 1751.
Witnesses Whitehead to Parker Deed in Aug 1725
John Taylor, Thomas Jenkins, and Joseph Culpeper witnessed in
Aug 1725 in Bertie County [the area that became Northampton in
1741] when William Whitehead sold 140 acres on the south side of
Potecasi Creek to Francis Parker.
10 Aug 1725. William Whitehead & wife Rachill to Francis Parker
& wife Mary, 50 pounds for 140 acres on south side Patterkersey
[Potacasie] Creek. Part of tract granted Robert Pateson and
elapsed. ... By William Whitehead patented 10 Aug 1720. On the
"Island Side" adj. Peter Daniels. "Furthermore I Francis Parker,
do bind and oblige myself not ... to sell this land ... without
free consent of my wife, Mary ... otherwise this deed will be
null and void ..." Wit: Thos. Jenkins, Joseph Culpeper, John
Taylor. Aug Ct. 1725. John Winns D. C/C."
