The Will of MN Bedgegood is found in Marlboro Wills Book A, p
90: I Malachi Nicholas Bedgegood of Marlborough District and
State of SC., To my half Brother Claudius Hicks and Hannah &
Betsey Hicks my half sisters & their heirs, 2 negro slaves named
Carolina & Ben.
To Carolina Smith $1,000.00 to be raised from a sale of so much
of my land in Chesterfield District as will be sufficient to
make that sum.
To wife Catherine Bedgegood a negro man slave named Prinny and
one half of the remaining part of all my real & personal estate
which has not here before been disposed of, to her and her heirs
provided she shall live single until or should marry and leave
lawful issue living at her death but in case she should marry &
died without leaving lawful issue living at her death i then
give bequeath & devise the same to her for life and no longer
and after her decease I give devise & bequeath the same unto my
nephew William Vernon and his heirs.
Item. I give devise & bequeath unto my said Nephew William
Vernon & his heirs all the residue of my real & personal estate.
Ex: Friends Mala Pegues, Wm. Vernon, Enoch Hanford & Thomas

Lidwin's mss p 118.
Because Catherine and Malachi had no children, and Malachi left
half his estate to her for her lifetime, at her death many heirs
turned up. She had a second marriage to John B. Billingsley, but
apparently had no living heirs by him at the time of her
death.--Much litigation. See Lidwin's MSS.The bond was issued by
Joel Winfield as clerk of court in Marlboro County to the Rev
Joshua Lewis on 1 Feb 1795.
