A new cousin I just met provided the proof in the form of an affidavit sworn by my grandfather in 1896, giving his mother's maiden name as Maynard. It is part of a large amount of paper regarding an attempt to get Henry's second wife, Emily Echols, Henry's yankee pension. This cousin's name is Rick Hudson, he is writing a book on the 1st Ala. Cav. (damyankee). Also one of Abner Alvis' (Henry's brother) -g-g-g-grandaughters gave me a print-out on the descendants of Abner, right up to present.

Henry S. Alvis was a Pvt Co. B 1st Alabama Cavalry - US (Yankee). He enlisted in Decatur, AL 20 Mar 1864 at age 43 years.

"The First Alabama Cavalry, US Volunteers, from 1863 until the end. The First was a tough, hard-riding, hard-fighting bunch of Loyalist Southerners who rode with Sherman and who had a reputation as burners. They torched Barnwell, SC to the ground, in spite of Gen. Kilpatrick's attempts to stop them, because it was a "nest of filthy Rebels that needs burning." [S474] [S18]
