The following was taken from The Virginia Genealogist, - The
Keys of Key West - Vol. 8, Oct-Dec 1964, Pg. 181.
In 1773, prior to moving to South Carolina, Henry Key conveyed
eight tracts (2180 acres) in Amherst County, Va. (now Nelson
County) to Charles Irving and his relation Martin Key of
Albemarle County as security for his debts, particularly a debt
due to Irving as factor for a British merchant. Henry Key
removed in 1774 to Ninety-Six District (now in Edgefield
County), South Carolina, where he died August 1776. His will is
on file in Edgefield County and was not probated until 1790
because of ligitation over his Amherst County property.

Key Cemetery: "The Archaeoligist stationed at Sumpter National
Forest in Edgefield, SC went to the site with some other people
and found the sink hole for the Key Family home. the Park
Rangers and archeologist started taking a special interest to
the site because of its' historical significance --- all of
which is documented in Edgefield County Records. This cemetery
was established even before the American Revolution and also
contains the oldest grave marker of any cemetery in the entire
area. That marker stone as I have already stated was dated 1775.
The name is not clear other than the name Key which is still
legible. I am of the opinion that the marker stone was for one
of Henry and Mary Clarke Keys younger children and most likely
that of a daughter since there are two daughters that can not be
found in any records as an adult. Henry Key died in 1776 and is
no doubt buried next to the person who died in 1775. There are
quite a number of graves in the cemetery which can be seen
because of the sink holes. Many of the graves have field stone
markers which have fallen over and which are also covered over
with the soil. Many can be found with just a little digging.
There is also another section of graves which is separate from
the main cemetery. This was most likely the cemetery for the
slaves as the family did have slaves. The early Edgefield County
Key Family was very prominent and well to do financially. In
fact, Henry Key owned enough land in his day that if he were
living today he would be a multi-millionire. Neither Henry's
will nor county land records reveal the total amount of land
which he owned. State records, however, reveal that he had over
11,000 acres in South Carolina. Since he was a land speculator,
he most likely had sold most of it before his death in 1776. As
a side note, he owned about 3,500 acres in Amherst Co., Va.
before he moved to South Carolina." posted by Gene Key 16 Aug
