Adam Davis HARE

14 Jun 1825 - 18 May 1895

ID Number: I8336

  • OCCUPATION: Planter
  • RESIDENCE: "The Elms", Pinopolis, Berkeley Co. SC
  • BIRTH: 14 Jun 1825
  • DEATH: 18 May 1895, prob. Berkeley Co. South Carolina
  • BURIAL: St. John's Baptist Church Cem. near Pinopolis, Berkeley Co.South Carolina
  • RESOURCES: See: [S306] [S2816]

Family 1 : Annis T. MAREE
  1. +Annis "Annie" Davis HARE

Notes

After serving a number of years as caretaker for David Ebaugh, A. D. Hare purchased the property in 1874. The principal crop on the high lands was cotton, while rice was grown on the marsh lands.

"The Elms" was left to his two daughters, Annis Davis McCants and Margaret Hare Guyton. Adam Davis Hare owned other rice plantations on the Cooper River, "Fairlawn", "Collington", and "Coleman". He left the river plantations to his two sons, A. D. Hare, Jr. and James Cuthbert Hare.

Each field was given the name of the negro family whose job it was to plant that field. After the end of slavery, the negro families were furnished a house, a mule, seed, and fertilizer. Food was often advanced against their share of the crop.

Fields named after families were: "Camel Field", "Bunk's (Palmer) Field", "Grayson Field", "Poinsett Field", and "Grover Field". Othe fields were named after geographic characteristics, such as Long Cut and New Ground.

Each mule on the plantation was managed by only one man who took great pride in his animal. Fights would often break out if anyone else tried to plow or mistreat a man's mule. The mules on the plantation were: Kate - driven by Jim Milligan, Emma - driven by Captain Spann, Tom - driven by Jesse Brown, Burt - driven by Ned Frazier, and Kitty - driven by Dave Frazier. "May" was a horse used to pull the buggy, but at times used to plow. "Jet" was a pleasure horse but could also do light plowing. The last mule on the plantation was named "Hitler" and was plowed by Joe Heyward.

In addition to helping their husbands in the fields, tending children, and running their own households, many negro women worked in the "Big House" or washed clothes to earn extra money. The wash women used by the family were Emma Heyward, Carrie Jones, and Lizzy Jones. The cooks were Jenetta Gillians, Emma Myers, Mum Tina Heyward, Jennie Hamilton, Lizzy Heyward, and Catherine (Loulie) Heyward. " [S306]
