7) "Jacob & Martha, son and daughter of John Colson were
involved in a missing will of William Harris. William Harris was
holding a cow and calf for Martha until she came of age
according to her father's will. Jacob had shown several people
the will, and he said he was going to take it to a John Butler,
but along the way ran into George Archer who read the will,
handed it to Martha and told her to burn it, then took it back
and told her to never speak of it, even to a husband if she
should get one. She did get her one, John Bevill, before the
whole mess was over. George Archer then gave the will to his
daughter, Judith, and told her to burn it. The will appears to
have disappeared after that. I have copies of depositions from
John Bevill, Martha Colson Bevill, and others. This all occurred
in mid-1690 while Martha was 18 years old. Also... Jacob
accidently shot and killed John Banister. Jacob was committed
into the custody of the sheriff in connection with the death of
John Banister, and he petitioned the court for his release on
bail. Although the court considered John Colson innocent, his
petition was submitted to the then Lt. Governor and the Council
of State for a decision.
This info came from the book "700 Years with the Bevills" - not
to be confused with "Pioneering with the Bevill Family" - same
family, different books. Martha Colson married John Bevill and
years later Abraham Colson's widow, Sarah Ford Colson, married
William Bevill. They lived on Abraham's land in Colleton Co,
