  1.  Lucius L. LAMPTON

Notes

"He spent his life chiefly in Marion and Pike counties of Mississippi. He knew only about farming until he became grown. For 3 years he was the clerk in a mercantile house in China Grove, Ms. Then he went in business in Topisaw. After a period of several years of successful business he sold out and married Mrs. Mary Jane Connerly Lewis, a young and
prepossing widow who lived near China Grove. She brought with her some means. He then located 3 miles above Tylertown. She died in 1879, Report current was that he gave quite a sum of money to the New Orleans merchant for the hand of his daughter in marriage. She was a young girl and he a widower, well along in years. The debt was finally adjusted, and Benj. Lampton established himself as a merchant of Tylertown. His pronounced success from that date, 1868, is known to all within a radius of many miles and to the mercantile world almost without limit. He was an honest man. He seemed always to live in a cheerful atmosphere.
His second marriage was to Ester Barnes of Pike co. Ms. in 1881. This fortunate union promoted his happiness during the last years of his life, and provided him with those tender loving hands which only a wife possessess, toadminister to his various wants in his long sickenss. Notes

The inventory of James Lindsay, 29 Dec 1797, was appraised by Nathaniel McCants, his brother-in-law, and William Cannon and James Mittles.

James Lindsay acquired two 100 acre plots in Craven Co. 1 Jan 1759, Granted land in Craven Co. 17 Mar 1760.

Book 1772-1776, page 93 shows James Lindsay was named executor of estate of James McCants, April 3, 1772. The Inventory of James Lindsay, December 29, 1797 was appraised by Nathaniel McCants his brother-in-law; William Cannon, ? Mittles (father or brother of Jane Mittles who married Andrew De Hay.

After the American Revolution, James was given a stub indent (similar to a promissory note) for 420 days of active duty in the militia in 1781 and 1782. This indent had a value of 87 pounds, 14 shilling and 3 pence.

James Lindsay and others sued the administrators of the estate of Patrick Lindsay. Patrick Lindsay, father of James, died in 1744 leaving a widow and five children and a small estated divided by will. After inventorying the est in March 1747, the widow remarried in 1749 to John Winter, who took over the estate and used it to his benefit. He maintained the Lindsay children "on common country fare, and clothed in homespun cloth, made on the place". James Lindsay alleged that John WINTER sold the personal property of the estate to pay his debts, retaining a slave named CLOE, who had a large family of children and grandchildren. This slave family was the object of the suit. Patrick Lindsay's widow, now Mrs. John Winter, died in 1781 or 1782, and John Winter died in 1785. Up to that time, he had not made any division of the estate. His estate representative were thus the defendants of the estate, claiming that Cloe and her family belonged to John Winter and not the Lindsay heirs. The verdict was that the five Lindsay children were entitled to 5/6 of the estate, including Cloie's family, and Winter's estate entitled only to the widow's 1/6.

There were four Lindsay-DeHay mergers---Three brothers and a sister married three sisters and a brother.

At various times during history, Union County was considered to be part of the following counties: Anson County, NC (formed in 1749); Mecklenburg County, NC (formed in 1763); Tryon County, NC (formed in 1769); Old Berkely County, SC (formed in 1683); Old Craven County, SC (formed in ???); St. Mark's Parish, SC (formed in 1757); and Ninety-Six (96) Judicial District, SC (formed in 1769).

Union County, South Carolina was established from the Ninety-Six (96) District in 1785. In 1791, the Pinckney Judicial District was established, comprising Union, Spartanburg, York, and Chester counties. In 1800, the judicial districts were abolished, and Union County was known as Union District from 1800 to 1868.
